Boat Shed/ Garage
Submitted by Kakkerlak on Fri, 2016-07-08 07:58
I’ve recently bought a new boat. The boat is glass and foam filled. I’m thinking of putting up a small colour bond shed to keep the boat out of the sun and elements. Space is limited so a brick garage can’t be done. I’m concerned about the heat in a shed in summer as I can imagine it will get very hot in there. Can the heat cause damage to the boat trailer? Does anyone else have a similar set up?

Anything is better than direct sun.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Cover
i don't think heat is so much the issue unless it is extreme, uv Ray's from the sun is what does the damage to my knowledge. I have a glass/foam filled boat and I just cover it with a cover off eBay costing $200-300 and my boat has stayed pristine.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

If anything a brick one
If anything a brick one would maybe take less room as u can build it as a parapet on the boundary

shade sail
you could put up 4 heavy duty steel columns and a custo9m shade sail for a fraction of the price of a shed.
either that, or bunnings are selling kit lean-tos for only a couple of grand.

hi good idea getting it
hi good idea getting it under cover will do a lot to protect it regardless of what the covers built from, my boat and many of my mates boats in the south west live in tin sheds with no issues at all. Its a good idea to keep long periods of wet weather off glass boats as well to stop water pooling in them. As for the trailer woud be fine in a tin shed also good luck with it.

if you do a paraphet wall make sure the frame is steel,
if you do a paraphet wall make sure its steel framed,at least a 100mm of the ground for the gyprock sheets, plus steel underneath the sheets to prevent termites getting into your house ,roof etc,i have seen so many failures as a pest controller, any way good luck with your project

Think you will find a
Think you will find a parapet wall must be fire rated, usually at leat 100mm of masonry or similar from memory.
Dont think steel framed with cladding covers it.
EDIT, parapet has a few meanings, in this case I meant building on the boundary to save backyard space

Talk to Shane up at Boat
Talk to Shane up at Boat Canopies in Wangara. He'll custom make a cover that fits like a glove. I had the same problem and decided to ditch the shed idea and just go with the cover. All good, keeps the whole boat dry and out of the UVs.

Combo.
Why not concider a combo of shade sails, (no building permit required) and a boat cover.
Both are replaceable when needed at a small cost, (compared with a fixed structure) and as said the aim is to keep UV away from the hull & the water from building up .
Cheers & Stay safe

My Dad has used tarps for 35 years
We have always used a tarp from econotarps and they last longer than the 3 years they guarantee, so much so econotarps have requested my Dad write a review for them. The current tarp is 8 years old as it was bought for the new boat in 2008. Previous to that had an 18' pacemaker for 30 years and replaced the windows after that time. No one would believe the perspex windows lasted that long but they did with the tarp cover as we had the boat from near new.
let us know I you want any more details
