boat storage idea's

I need more storage space in my 5m trailcraft runabout. Any one have any good tips or idea's on how to maximise the space in a runabout?

At the moment i have 4 life jackets, safety gear, spare anchor and a tool box up the front which makes it quite cramped.

This isnt my boat but gives you an idea of the area where i need some extra storage room.

cheers

Seat boxes

You could remove the pedastals and fit seat boxes and then mount the seats back on top. They can give you heaps more space

Agree with the seat box or replace the front seats with a bench style esky seat if you don't have kill tanks

2 good ideas there for the storage probs. those seat boxes are great but make sure you get the right sze if you go that way.another way would be to get youself some marine ply and knock up a couple yourself.all you will need is a saw , some screws , silicone and a couple of hinges and then you can make them exactly to the size you need

I store 4 set of fins and snorkel gear with my sea anchor and that is just one side and it's not even full. They are great. It's even got the flip up seats which are different compartments again and i store stuff like flares, epirb, tool kits, spare parts, and incidentals like sea sick tablets, keys etc here.

put in some slide out trays

Tue, 2011-03-15 08:29

put in some slide out trays under the dash area. and one large bin with lid for life jackets etc.

also if you don't want to take out the seats and save some cash, get a pair of plastic or plywood wall mounted cabinets and put them back to back under the seat, with a half moon cut in each ones back for the seat post. That way you can bolt then together and have a cheap under seat storage.

another trick is to get those kiddy seat back pack systems, the type that goes on the back of the front seats as a kid organizer for all their toys on the road. It works real well for keeping stuff off the deck.

Lastly if you buy those screw bins, the types that hang from a rail and about the size of a small ice cream 2L tub. Then can be glued to the side of the hull with a good epoxy and give you place for bait, sinkers and stuff under the gunnels.

Lastly, you can toss out the two seats all together, get a 80L esky ( nice big blue type) and then remount the seats on top of it. That way you keep the comfy seats and get a huge kill tank under your bum.

also go out and buy the Peter Webster books on Ally boats from F&B Magazine.... tons of ideas on storage etc. He has a book out just on storage and fit out etc. I never regret buying all six books and use them all the time for ideas.

cheers

Soft netting or amplemesh

Tue, 2011-03-15 15:43

Soft netting or amplemesh shelving halfway up under the dash storage area for soft items like vests etc.

get an aloy sheet cut, bend to size (make a dummy from cardboard)and powdercoated it white to block off the driver- & passenger footwell/kickboards.

This together with some halfway shelving will make the front of that boat carry an awfull lot of loose gear

Under the "false floor" of your boat could be a huge area availabe for storage, kill tanks etc.etc.

Bit of work to get it propperly done, but the storage is a premium in any boat.

cheers for the advice guys, will be looking at getting some seat boxes.. either going to knock some up or buy ready made if there not too pricey.

But since the floor is a fully sealed deck, How would i mount the boxes on the floor? Would they have to be welded on?

Was also thinking of making a false floor in the front where the luggage barrier is. Then i can stow away my spare anchor, drift anchor, spare mask/fins etc. Reckon that would work?

Would love a kill tank but cant with the sealed deck, have to use a ice box

Mate if you don't have a kill

Wed, 2011-03-16 11:06

Mate if you don't have a kill tank then the esky/seat is great, PM tiimmbo if you want to see how it works out. Basically we dropped brackets into the deck which we sealed so there is no water ingress that way the eskyseat doesn't move when travelling but is completely removeable. My suggestion would remain the same for ali and you can weld the brackets on, extreme coolers look to have a wide range of esky's that you could pick to suit the tub. Just my thoughts in that regard, trying to maximise space on a small boat is a must IMO.

Not sure if it would be

Wed, 2011-03-16 11:18

Not sure if it would be strong enough in that situation, but marine sikaflex can be pretty good at sticking stuff down. If you use enough area you might be able to stop the esky from moving too much (or at least sliding). Not so fun removing it if you have paint though.

Putting a tray under the 'console' (damn, whats the word) would help with storing some stuff. You dont usually use the full height of the space so its a good way of storing extra gear. The toolbox, safety gear, flares, EPIRB could be tucked away quite nicely and you wouldnt loose much room at all (just a little height). Dropping 2 of the lifejackets will help if you only have two on board. You can get much more compact self inflating ones too but not sure on cost (or whether they're ok for offshore).

You could also fit something to the cutout on the dash (looks like it could store a bit of stuff if it went the whole way across.

If not fitting an icebox, then the spaces to the sides of the chairs could store a bit of stuff if organised well.

Gotta get around to organising space on my tinny sometime. Enough nooks and crannies (one of the reasons I dont like those fully sealed decks), just not enough time to get around to it yet.

We'll here's what i came up

Wed, 2011-04-27 22:10

We'll here's what i came up with. Ended up knocking up a false floor in the front of the boat so i gain more storage under the floor. Just made the frame with 120x35 pine which i waterproofed with bitumen paint. It has 2 carpeted floor sections which are completly removable. It now can hold spare sand anchor, reef anchor, drift anchor, spare mask & snorkel, flippers, spare rope etc. Pretty happy with the extra space i have as it has cleared a heap of room in the side pockets too. Left the space under the seat open as my tackle bag fits under one side and the deckie's tacklebox can fit on the other side.

access hatch

Thu, 2011-04-28 21:46

Silly , i have a trailly and i ended up cutting the sealed deck and installing a waterproof hatch to re seal, i then had a huge hole under the floor which i boxed out o prevent gear from moving further down the hull, i also cover in rubber belt matting to prevent any banging of stowed gear, i now hold 4 x 100 mts of ropes, 2 sea anhors and sand anchor plus some other buckets etc and its only half full , you do need to be a bit handy with a jigsaw and rivet gun,   i also filled the under side of the hull with pool tubes which quietens the ride , which i had seen at razorline
