Boating Accidents

Friday had a capsize off the back of Garden Island and yesterday had another one off Rotto.

I took the wife, kid and woof down to Woodmans Point on Friday and couldn't believe how far the swell was managing to make it around the corner, and could see waves breaking inside Carnac Island. There were certainly some boomers out.

Be safe people. Be smart too! Even in 2-3m swell, waves WILL break where they don't normally break, as we have seen.

Flare reported

Sun, 2014-04-20 09:09

We had a flare sighting reported off Fitzroy reef out from the Blowholes, don't know the exact details but received a call that it was all in hand and all safe onshore about an hour later.

The big swell was really pumping on Thursday when I was up there

I was over at GI when it

Sun, 2014-04-20 09:26

I was over at GI when it happened, boat missed the channel and went up a wave which threw the motor up and they lost control. Boat did a 180 and turned straight back into the line-up and got hit side on. Was very surreal, my brother and I jumped in our boat and raced out to see a son battling to hold his elderly father afloat. My brother jumped in with some lifejackets and helped the pair. The father was spitting out blood and pretty clearly had buggered his arm and wasn’t in a good state. With the help of another boat we managed to drag the pair to the beach and waited for ambos. Next minute cops, ambos, fireys and helicopters all appeared, then police boat and volunteer rescue although they only suck around for a minute then took off.

Made me realise how quick it can go bad, the boat was hired and was by no means new, had they been in a new/maintained boat with trim and hydraulic steering the situation may have been a lot different.

I think you nailed it first sentence.

....boat missed the channel and went up a wave.....

May have got away with it on a calm day, but with the swell up, poor navigation and choices will see you punished.

Glad to see them survive and I hope they will be more cautious next time.

Well done, its a good thing you were on the spot when it happened and could assist them straight away or it might have been a completely different outcome.

I think there are some very lucky people around who can thank their lucky stars that you and your mate where on the scene so quick or we might be reading about a tragedy. Also good to see so many rescue services come to the scene to help, it only takes a second and a great day on the water can turn to a life and death situation.

Its a pity that the tradition doesnt always extend to seafarers on land as in "Roadside assistance" thread of the boaties driving straight past

Thanks guys, I think most

Mon, 2014-04-21 09:02

Thanks guys, I think most people would have done the same in the situation.  The real hero was my brother, years of surf lifesaving training finally payed off. The son said he was going to take his 3yo son out also, so thank god he decided against that as I think/know there would have been a different outcome.
