Braid to Mono
Submitted by shimmy_woosh on Mon, 2013-04-29 15:22
Been losing a fair few fish of the beach lately (all be it mainly sharks), however have been noticing slips in the braid the mono connection. Mainly just tie a double uni, just wondering whatevery one else mainly ties when beach fishing?

Depends on the line I'm
Depends on the line I'm using. Braid to a thick leader I'll use a back to back uni (increase the number of turns with the braid if it slips), if the leader is 30lb or under an Improved Albright is yet to fail me. It can be worth tying a bimini if your chasing properly large fish but not worth the effort if your after anything less than 15kg. I'll be busy catching more fish while the other person is wasting thier time with that bimini when they have to re-rig.

why not use the albright for
why not use the albright for heavier gear? a LOT stronger than the back to back uni for sure, and a lot neater and slimmer too.
I personally tie bimini to a GT knot, or if i'm short on time when fish are going off, its the Slim Beauty - basically a GT knot, just without the loop.

90% of my fishing is done
90% of my fishing is done with braid in the 10-20lb range. The albright just doesn't tie that neatly or securely (no matter how many wraps), for me at least, into leaders exceeding 30lb when the braid is that thin. I find the back to back uni just as easy to tie & is neater with 30lb + leaders. I havn't had a problem with it that I can recall so I'll keep doing it that way until I have reason to change things up.

Might be
the version of the Albright that your using that is the problem?
There are at least 4 that i've seen and after trying them all i've found 1 that suits me.
I use it for light braid to mono connections (up to 20lb) then bimini to GT everthing above that.
Nothing wrong with experimenting to improve what your already doing

Possibly. The one I use is
Possibly. The one I use is just 9 wraps down then 8 wraps back up pass the tag back through the loop the same direction as the main. Works for me in everything from 2lb braid to 2lb leader up to 20lb braid to 30lb leader. I have used it occasionally to tie 50lb braid to 80lb leader but usually I just use the back to back uni as it's easier for me to tie neatly. I guess I'm just going with the 'if it ain't broke' idea. Maybe I'll experiment when/if I actually have a bust off at the joining knot but until then I'm happy with what I'm doing.

The slim beauty is an excellent knot. Tied one for a mate a year ago at shark bay and he fished all year with it and we only had to redo it this year in shark bay and he still got through most of that trip too.

Grog Knots
It's an app for your phone, I think you can get it on your pc aswell. It has many different knots and you can find the one that works for you. All the knots are animated to make it easy.

I have never had a PR knot
I have never had a PR knot slip.
Take a while to tie until you get the hang of them, but wouldn't use anythign else now
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Depends, when I'm at home
Depends, when I'm at home and have time I spend more time on my knots, I use the the double uni knot. But once out in the open in a rocking boat after a few lost rigs I go down to an Albright knot, but I put a couple of half hitches to finish it off. Quick and strong.

Give the sebile knot a go, I
Give the sebile knot a go, I think its pretty much the same as an albright in theory. It is the slimmest knot possible (good for casting), and I haven't had one fail yet. Using 20lb braid and 30lb leader at the Abrolhos, the knot to my lure snapped before the sebile knot when i got snagged a couple times. Check it out on youtube its dead easy.
p.s. Have the line from ur rod fairly tight when tying, helps keep it neat n easy

FG knot FTW.... super flat and easy to tie without needing a bobbin. no bimini so less wraps around guides if the bimini opens up

Or the Sebile knot. I have been told they are basically the same but done different ways???
Do the Sebile for all my braid to mono connections now for Boat, Beach, Rock, River and Estuary fishing.

I got this video from another thread and have tied one like this and love it.

Mine is from 30lb braid to 40lb leader. Was using sp's the other day and had 2 snags. From what I could tell the Rapala knot on the jig head was going (40lb) and this knot held up fine (30lb braid to 40lb leader)

this is the same video i learned to tie the knot with.
changed over from the albright to this, the plus to this knot than the albright is the tag end is vice versa, so doesnt catch on the guides when casting.

Cheers guys for the advice.
If you are fishing tailor style rigs are you better of tying straight onto the main line or a swivel?

No just tie your braid to
No just tie your braid to mono using one of these knots (gt knot for me) so that you have a decent leader say one metre then tie your rig to the mono. I never tie any knot in my braid other than the gt knot. The braid cuts itself otherwise. This method is pretty optimal including lure fishing and won't let you down!
