Braid to Mono Albright Quick test.

So i got bored and decided to have  a quick test of my braid to mono topshot today, what go me curious was a few break offs from casting 60gm jigs, sinkers off the rock and busting off during mid cast while shutting the bail(was using 40lb suffix braid at the time), so anyways today i decided to test my connection and maybe you should test yours if you are having doubts about your connection.

  1. Topshop was 80lb mono connected to 30 or 50lb ygk jigman using albright. tested it with my brother slow pull got around 9-10kgs and it was ok, so next i jerk pulled the reel back like a fish doing a big run, snapped at around 6-7kg?, tried this a few times and same thing happened, the line broke just after the albright knot.
  2. After some thought i decided why not try something i read ages ago on distance casting forums using lighter topshot than the braid, so i put on 30lb mono top shot on connected it with albright and uni knot to digital scale, first test it held up ok to 8-9kg then it let go at the uni knot, so i retied it with a longer uni knot, did it again using the jerk pull and 3-4 times it held up to the spike at 8-10.5kg pull didnt test beyond that, but it was a good test.

Conclusion, Albright knot wasnt a good connection at all with braid to heavy mono, especially when the mono was low stretch, however when i changed the topshot to lower rating with decent stretch it saved the braid from shock breakage, would love to hear your opinions on this and has anyone tried some quick test of their own??

i have sat and tied and re tied albrights as i did have probs with them.

i have found when tied correctly , they are a good connection.

there are a few ways to tie them , but the best i found was,

pass the braided double through the folded mono , then wind braid around the doubled mono 12 + times upward. (towards the hook/lure) keep the wraps close together and tight.

then bring the tag end of braid straight back down and back through mono loop left. (through the same way as it entered)

snug the braid down all the way before pulling tight. <most important

tho shutting the bail mid cast isn't the best idea

That is exactly how i tie my albright knots, but the line braid didnt break at the knot but rather after the knot area, so the albright is still intact on the mono, but 60gm gram weight breaking  40lb suffix braid mid cast is abit suss and it didnt break at the knot either it broke at least 5 metres away from the knot.

Hey guys - new to the site, I have had similiar issues. What worked for me was 1st to create a bimini knot - pull it that you have at least 50cm of play; - dont cut the last piece - this is your 3rd line - then use all 3 strands of braid to tie allbright onto 80 / 120 lb line - this has worked for me well with some heavy beasts / and about 2hrs worth of burn.

Hey mate welcome to the site, i just learn the bimini twist like 30 mins ago and use this combination, http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-connect-monofilament-fishing-line-braid-247528/ i test it on the scale now the 2 knot are holding and the good sign now is it is breaking at the mono to scale knot, so i am very confident it will hold now at the joints!

Excellent Dicey - thks man. It looks good / slim as well, not as thick as the allbright - will surely give this a go. Let me know how your fishing has gone with this knot - I will probably only give this a go closer to month end. Cheers

Will do Blou, i just tried 30lb main line braid bimini to 80lb flouro and tried to break it by jerking the line and with heavy drag got to about 12-13kg drag and managed 5 big jerks pull before it broke, when it broke could smell it got really hot , smelt abit like gunpowder, definitely better then before with albright it broke at 5-6kg.

Thats the yukatan knot, i use that knot for jigging. Very easy to tie but for casting I use a gt knot. With the yukatan knot the tag end faces upwards towards the guides, with the gt knot it faces back the other way.
