its not too lite for a shark, but it will be extremely sporting. i remember watching an episode of Rex Hunt when they were using 6kg stuff for small trevs etc and they hooked a rather large hammer. they got it in ,but it took a long time!

For a learner
Braid to Leader direct -- Double uni with a lot extra turns on the braid side, or a Allbright knot (but I have had some slip so I add some superglue to this one)
Braid to swivel - Modified Polamar knot with extra loops through the eye.
Swivel to Leader- good 4 turn Uni with spit
Mono to Mono - Double Uni
Fishing for flatties Braid to Mono leader direct. Forget the swivel. Braid is not as prone as Mono to line twist and you dont need it.
Mono to Mono leader go a swivel for sure.
Once you have perfected these knots you will be dying to learn others. Then learn the Bimini and tie a double braid in the Braid to Mono Uni knot. A GT knots is the best but I find that overkill unless I am chasing leviathans like GTs, or comp fishing which I dont.
Thousands of different opinions on these combination but KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle when your learning is the best.
Good fishing
Neels
PS Mono to hook unless you have a double forget the snell, just 4 turn Uni. If I do snell the bottom hook is still a Uni with a silly above it.

braid knots
I think for beginners the uni knot is the easiest, while still strong connection for braid to swivels etc then the double uni for braid to leader when you have this down pat you will then probably want to learn a better connection which is bimini twist to albright for the leader then a uni knot in your leader to your hook/ hooks , these knots seem very difficult but once you get the hang of them they are reasonably quick to tie and create a very strong connection.

I am most definately a beginner
& have major issues tying knots. I've collected a few fishing magazines over a short period of time and have found a few will even go over knots in a step by step basis. I have found these very helpful. They are usually 3 mags for the price of one in a clear bag. One mag was just knots.
I've also purchased a DVD for $5 that was made and produced by that shop which is a 3rd fishing. This covered how to catch Bream, Flathead & Snapper. There was a guy on that DVD called Adam? who looked like the guy who hosts the AFC Fishing Championships. Anyway he showed how to tie a fluorocarbon leader to braid using a knot he referred to as a 5 turn surgeons knot. I've tied both the double uni & the surgeons knot and found the latter the easiest. Possibly beacuse I'm left handed lol.
