Man rescued from stricken boat near Garden Island
Police have slammed a 39-year-old man at the centre of a dramatic sea rescue for his decision to head out to sea in a 4.2m boat during today's violent storm.
As rescue crews winched the man from his boat to the RAC rescue helicopter, Water Police Sen. Sgt Greg Trew expressed his disbelief at the sailor's decision to brave today's terrible conditions.
"It defies logic why he decided to go out there today," Sen. Sgt Trew said.
"It is unbelievable. The lives of the rescuers were put at risk because the weather conditions were atrocious."
The weather bureau has issued numerous warnings about today's wild weather since yesterday, with predictions of wind gusts up to 125km/h for the metropolitan area.
Crew onboard the helicopter located the vessel south west off Garden Island about 2pm.
The vessel sustained a broken mast. The sailor activated an EPIRB about 12.20pm when he hit trouble.
Sen. Sgt Trew said conditions out at sea were "atrocious" at the time and rescuers battled large swells and 50 knots winds.
The helicopter initially guided water police to the vessel but it was too dangerous to transfer him to their vessel.
Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue operations officer Frank Pisani said the conditions at sea were as “bad as it gets”.
“We have big boats and we would not go out in conditions like that. People should rather be cautious,” Mr Pisani said.
The man, who is suffering hypothermia, is expected to be flown to Jandakot and is due to arrive shortly.

ABC news last night
said the yacht is banging up against the causeway bridge, but agree have to be total idiot for going out in that weather, nearly got blown away doing the shopping. The look of his face on the TV, it appeared he looked like he was with the fairies.

Just stupid!
Not only is he putting his own life at risk, but also those involved in the rescue.
If there isn't punitive legislation for this sort of foolhardiness, there ceretainly should be and yes, ADD the cost of the rescue as well.
