Bream Rod?

Gang

I'm HOPING (haven't arrived yet Yell) that my step daughters (3 of) are going to send me down fishing gear vouchers - so I'm HOPING for enough to pick up an inexpensive Bream Rod. I'm an absolute novice when it comes to bream rods, but thought I'd need something with a fast live taper at the end for flicking light softies and HBs, but with a little bit of musle below that (for the 37-40cm guys - hopefully!) and the (supa hopefully) odd Mulla that haunts the Hay/Kalgan etc.

I'm only guestimating - but should get $70-$100 and can probably stretch this a little bit.

What's the suggestions folks?

I really like the Berkley drop shots. Good value and pretty versatile.

They look pretty good with the fugi guides, any reason you went for the 2-4 rather than the 4 Col?

I have the 2 to 4 kilo one peice and the newer series 2, 2 to 4 kilo 2 peice , both are 7 foot rods , the new one is a dream to use matched up to my Freams KIX and 8 lb braid I have subdued Murry cod to 5 kilo's and yellow belly to 3 kilos no worries and I even use it for squidding off the back of the boat .

Plastics and small hard bodied lures are a dream to use .

Yeah mate, another endorsement for the dropshots, nice rods to use and at a good price. I like the 7ft ones becoause of that little extra lenght makes a difference IMO. Don't go shorter than 6'6" from the shore unless you have to otherwise you will sacrifice casting distance. Also don't go higher than the 2-4kg as on most occasions they will have more than enough balls to subdue a 40+cm bream (albany standards thats an average fish hahaha.)1-3 kilo rods are fine as well.

A few other rods to look at are the Pflueger Trion, Shimano Raider and starlo stik and a Strudwick Sic Stik, these are all around your price range.

If you want you can have my Strudwick Sofbodz 6'6" (now a 6'4" because i cut two inches of the rear grip, more comfortable)2-4kg for $125.

Have a look at the lure

Mon, 2008-06-30 19:06

Have a look at the lure weight ratings and give the rods a bit of a flick around. Some rods just dont flick really light lures like bream lures around as well, and some dont cast very heavy weights, so pick what works for you.

Even herring are a bit of fun on my light bream rod, but I dont cast anything heavier than about 5-7g with it (well, you could, if you lob instead of flick).

Yeah, that's why I thought a light tip with the right taper would be good.

Do you have a prefernce Col when bream fishing?

Cheers mate, but at around $229 that might be pushing it.  What's the significance of the XL?

It depends on where I am fishing Colin

If there are not many snags around, the 2-4 kg is the go. But if you have to pull something away quickly from some snags, the 4 kg is probably a better bet. I tend to use the 4kg from rock walls as well.

Personally, I prefer a softer tip for the light stuff. Okuma do a couple of nice new models around that end for good $$$. I would have said the DS is a little stiff for the lighter stuff, but ideal for hb's. I still have one myself that I use for some offshore light jigging.

Not sure on $$$ Col, but there are a few good rods for sale at BW in the city. A nice Daiwa Zero going for a good price.

Even a Heartland would be worth a look and there are a few places running out some of the Struddies for a good price.

HTH.

LOL Yup

Tue, 2008-07-01 16:03

My only saving grace is that it's a local store not the big one down their (Wink) - so I'll have a limited range to hlokk LOL. But they Pfluegers, Dropshots, Starlos etc etc. But at $65.00 with Fugi SIC guides and RS, I think the Pflueg is going to be hard to beat.

Both the Dropshot and Pfluegers are well regarded by the young Bream guns down here - so I rate that advice highly. As I do the advice in here I might add! Wink

Sounds pretty good value

Tue, 2008-07-01 16:18

Sounds pretty good value Colin, I dont know how they can get it that cheap with silicons (perhaps not fuji silcons, but i dont know too much what the diff is). Irregardless, still sounds good value. If they have dropshots, pfleugers and starlos, then theres still a fair few rods to choose from. If they have them, the raiders might be worth looking at.

As for spending a lot of time looking, its mainly because I rushed a couple of rods at the start and they didnt quite suit me, so was a bit more careful next time(s). Plus hanging around tackle shops asking heaps of questions, you pick up heaps of info, a lot more than I would otherwise get (especially for my experience level). Though I tend to take my time just so i'm not stopping other people from being served :p

Oh, and I hate holding on to the threads of the reel seat and I hold the rod one finger above the reel mount, so had to find a rod with with a reel seat that suits (still quite a few out there though)

I'm running a strudwick sic stik pro btw, yet to catch a bream on it, but its damn fun on herring and bonito. Probably not quite as easy to find though.

Sorry Colin, just got away from working to check the forums. I've not used the Pfleuger in anger myself so I can't really comment and haven't seen many around to be honest, sorry.

As mentioned, $65 for a rod with sic guides is pretty cheap, but doesn't mean it's rubbish either. At least at that price you can keep it as a spare is you don't like it.

Thanks for getting back to us. Was talking to the guys at the local tackle store and they advised that Pflueger had been bought out or something (can't remember the full story), but that they were able to put there hands on a few at a very low price - they normally retail around $200.00 .

Well, finally decided on and picked up my pflueger president HM graphite 7' 2pc 2-4Kg rod with Fuji SIC guides and seat for $60.00 brand new from my local (Albany) tackle shop! At that price, I had to get it!

(Might seam strange to some buying gear after I sold two good reels, but it was money for my birthday present so felt obliged to buy myself a present Tongue out)

Have a bit in the kitty for a few lures, so off to hit either the Kalgan or Hay rivers next week, or maybe the flats - woohoo!
