Broome Boating Facilities Survey
Submitted by dodgy on Thu, 2020-03-19 09:25
For all those that love to visit Broome or even plan to one day.
Broome for all their marketing as a tourist destination has very poor boat launching facilities. Beach launches with vehicles in door depth water is a common sight.
Feel free to jump over and answer these couple of survey questions and hopefully there will be some funding sent their way sooner rather than later.
Personally I’d stopped fishing the Billfish tournament as the launching logistics just got too hard and not worth the tow.

Thanks for putting that up
Thanks for putting that up mate. I have pretty well given up on getting anywhere up here to improve our facilities, every time we get somewhere a little shitpot group of mungbean doo gooders throws their ten cents worth in and f@#ks the processs not to mention the indigenous industry that just wants kickbacks.
I sold my 7.0 metre boat as I was over the expense due to launching here and the safety issue of retreiving in shit conditions.
We have a world class fishery here that could attract a lot of people with the right facilities and generate a good economy for all, It is a disgrace from alllevels of government that these facilities aren't here.

I remember launching up
I remember launching up there with a mate a few years back and thinking this has got to be a joke, apart from being dangerous.

Just looked at this survey
Just looked at this survey and the proposed plan. What a fucking joke.
Ramps with rock walls that are too short to give you any protection from the prevailing southeastery and southwesterly winds we get all times of the year and an open ended breakwall that will do nothing to slow the current down at the ramp when we get a large tide( every fortnight) try holding a boat in that current. Sick of these beaurocrats not listening to the people that actually use the facilities. What a waste of money.... It will be safer to keep beach launching.

Looks like a nice looking
Looks like a nice looking funnel for the current.
Wouldnt like to bring a boat into the jetty with any sort of tide movement.

Broome needs something
Broome needs something similar to Exmouths marina exit where it offers protection from the prevailing wind and calm water at the ramps.
The only reason that breakwater isn,t joining the shore is because apparently the rock outcrop on shore is important. Peoples safety isn't. Go figure.

What a bad idea
To me (and I don't go to Broome very often now) it looks as though it has been designed by some person who hates boat fishermen.
IMO not much thought has gone into the planning with the safety of boaters in mind.
For it to be effective and safe it must provide protection from the fast and powerful current provided by the large tidal movement that occurs throughout the site.
Think about what you are designing and why you are designing it

Get a couple of whale
Get a couple of whale watching, eco cruise businesses involved or register a new one(if you have a tinnie) might get some better funding.

Not many
Have tried harder than bill collector to sort this shit sandwich for years and it's typical incompetent desk jockeys that forget or more likely refuse to talk to the locals . Same as leeman ramp

And, meanwhile, Tantabiddi in line for a massive upgrade
Fully enclosed in breakwater. Don't now if it's out for public comment yet, had a quick privileged look at the proposal a while back.

The design is a joke
But if enough people let them know thats the case then it can be improved. Unfortunately I don't see it happening. I'll continue to launch at the slipway on 5.5m tides.

If you want the tourist dollar
Then you must listen to what the tourists want in the way of facilities. The local businesses must see that point and give the shire the hustle as I think a few of them would be very reliant on a good tourist season.

It's not just the tourists
It's not just the tourists dollar meg. its about having safe facilities to launch for everyone. We have a steady population here of around 14000 people and most fish at some stage with a lot out every chance they can. For a town this size it is a bloody joke the facilities we have but it doesn't seem to matter how much effort is put in we get nowhere because of lots of different crap( I'm being polite here). This proposal is a joke and will not enhance safety at all. if anything it will be more dangerous . After 23 years in Broome this is just the next one to be proposed and undoubtedly will go the same way as the rest..... I won't be here to see it built.
