buff bream

does anyone here ever give buff bream a bash for sport?

found an awesome spot for them in hilarys last week

they school in the hundreds in this spot and the biggest ones would go 8kg easy

me and SOI discovered the spot while snorkelling

we were chucking bits of seaweed to them and they were nailing it

in amongst the buffys ther were a couple of BIG tarwhine

we threw a couple of plastics at them but nothing to show for it

i think buff hunting is great fun and the fish are underrated (not eating qualitiesYell)

we were nailing em on light tackle and were having an awesome time on the 1kg ones

u gotta watch out if you hook a bigger one on light tackle though

i got seriously made p*** by one on 4lb!

this one would have been bout 4kg

we try using dough but the blowies get to it too quick mostly or falls off

but if u get it at a good consistancy and wait til sundown the blowies go away and buffs come out and you get em on dough

so give it a try guysWink

OT You mix flour and water to a consistency where it

can be easily rolled up in to ball. Get some flour and slowly add water to you get the mixture you want. Make sure it is not too sticky, ir it becomes a pain to bait your hooks as your fingers will be sticky.
You can get fancy by adding garlic powder or aniseed.
We also put some cotton wool in the mixture as it helps hold the dough on your hook.

next to spinnakers ther is

Thu, 2009-01-08 11:25

next to spinnakers ther is the skippy soft plastic spot then to the left of that u have the yacht club

snorkel around the fence for the yacht club and look under the big riviera boat,

you will see a school of about 300 buffys

then swim up onto the rocks and get someone to pass ur gear through a hole in the fence and cast bits of weed in front of the boat and let it sink slowly

best rig is so simple..... main line attached to swivel then fluorocarbon leader (needs to be approx 1m long) and a size 8-10 hook

i was using 4lb braid mainline and 8lb fluro leader but thats undergunned for the big ones

OT yeah its just pollard, flour and water

you need to use heaps of flour and kneed it well because it can get mushy if you dont do it well

Found them last Sunday but

Found them last Sunday but had no rod with me at the time!

To be truthful, didn't know what fish they where, I just picked them up on the side finder and just marked the spot for further investigation. also picked up big schools of bait fish down the channels in the deeper water along where the boats travel too.  Could have been loads of blowies but then again? Also found a decent school of Mullet by where all the boats are for sale right by the pub.

Funniest thing though, where all the fishos where fishing is where I hardly picked up any fishy activity and if I did it was just from one or two fish or just the odd one sitting off against a bit of structure. Still learning to interpret what a f/f is showing me so yet to know what half of what I see actually is.

A lot easier if you use a yak and then they can,t kick you off for being in the boat yard. LOL

Just been practising in the harbour and on the Swan until I get the bottle up to head a bit further out past the walls into the choppy water.
