Buff Bream metro

hey,

i know lots of people consider buff bream to be a 'shit' fish but after hooking up to a few and expieriencing their power i was wondering if there are any good spots to target them.

cheers Matt

in my younger days i would go down to point peron armed with a light rod pencil float and a small hook we would grab some of the green kelp from the water and put it on the hook casting just into the drop off! was great fun there are also plenty caught from the causeway to garden island in the corner of the large bridge closest to the mainland we would catch them on prawn!

Land based or boat?

Wed, 2011-07-27 14:09

Rottnest is where ive had some fun with them. But most metro breakwalls hold good numbers. Eagle bay at rotto ive landed some fish up to 5kg on tiny hooks and kelp. Your right though, you could be subject to mockery! But Landing one of those 50lb fish is no easy task. Even the small fish head for rocks and caves when hooked

Wed, 2011-07-27 14:18

Used to see mobs of them around Penguin island in my old diving days. My mate caught one off Busselton once it was about 15kg from memory. I remember him bringing it on board only to crap green weedy poo all over the deck.

Wed, 2011-07-27 19:06

There are different species, not all are "Buff Bream" they look similar though. (Silver Drummer?) I have cooked a chowder out of one and gave a bowl to a mate who scoffed it down, half way through his second bowl of chowder (yes he went back for more) I told him it was "Buff Bream" and he then felt like chucking up and fighting me, LOL. They are edible you just need to disguise the flavour a bit, well, a lot and I'm sure a master chef could make an excellent meal out of one. Just need to get the right species that prefers a bit of meat instead of weed I guess?.

Most (if not all) marina rock

Wed, 2011-07-27 16:31

Most (if not all) marina rock walls should have resident buffs. I used to target them at Hillarys marina many years ago. Go on a reasonably calm day and walk along the top of the rocks armed with a bucket full of pollard/burley. When you think you see some, throw some pollard into the water to get them excited. We used to get busted off much more often then we'd land one, but it's all part of the fun!

Had a bloke at work eat one

Wed, 2011-07-27 19:16

Had a bloke at work eat one last year and he came in saying he didn't know why people didn't eat them (he was serious, not taking the piss) and trying to convince the rest of us to try...  no takers though. I've also managed to sore a couple of smaller ones on a small spoon while targetting herring, one on one day and 7 in an hour the next but none since, the landed ones were only around 40cm long though. Chatting to one of the fisheries guys, apparently around here (gero) they are more carnivorous than in other places.

If they are considered shit fish why target them?

Wed, 2011-07-27 19:25

Just avoid them as I would like them to avoid my baits.... It's like people targeting Rays because they are "good fun" FFS that shits me. Please....leave them alone if you can. Sambos give a great fight also and it's hard to avoid them but they are quite hard to release if they have been heavily stressed in the fight and you don't know how to do it.

OK OK so I am on my bike again...sorry.

No way hahaha
the reason i target rays is because i dont have the gear/knowledge to get out deep and jig bottom bounce etc and have a 'proper' fight. Fair enough Stingrays dont give headshakes, but hey they pull some line!

Cheers

One day you will realise that killing our fish stocks for your enjoyment is just a really low life thing to do and I hope you stop doing it, calling yourself The"official" is just a wank statement , grow up little boy

Edit: if I catch you targeting our pet stingrays in my backyard, I will personally fuck you up in return...deal?

Are you saying if you dont eat them dont catch them?

I target Black bream but I mainly catch and release, does this mean I should leave them alone because I have "fun" catching them?

Yes..

Wed, 2011-07-27 21:10

If you consider them as shit fish well... leave them alone. I can agree that we don't have a choice as to what takes our bait but my point is that you should not go out deliberatly targeting fish that you consider are shit fish. That was the topic that started thread. I like to target Black Bream as well and I enjoy one or two on the plate if the size is right. Taking a single small hook out of one of the creatures and returning it to it's elements is simple when compared to a gang in the mouth of a ray and a 100lb trace and a gaff used to beach for a photo. Keep things in perspective mate. Please.

Don't understand

Wed, 2011-07-27 21:42

I don't understand why you would target ray's, If you fish for mulloway and sharks of the beach you will catch them anyway.

But i chase trout and think they are crap to eat, Many fisho's fish for species they don't intend on eating. Lot's of pic's on here of Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna,Sambo's, etc, the list goes on and on. As long as all the fish are treated with care and respect i don't see the problem.

Buff bream are fun to catch and i even tried a bit once, I was shown to fillet them without popping the stomache, wich stinks and will make the flesh horrible. It was ok to eat but i couldn't get my head around the fact it was buff bream and have never tried it again.

Cheers Grant..

So then you would rather kill

Thu, 2011-07-28 07:34

So then you would rather kill and eat a meter long barra, which at that size is definently a big breading female fish, rather then return it to the water and hope a smaller barra comes along for ur dinner?! Thats retarded mate! U keeping a fish like that is kiling way more fish then the guys practicing catch and release! I guess ur probly also against all the guys who are tagging our demersal fish for research then? All uve gotta do is look at Paul G's posts to see that the fish are surviving and catch and release is a great thing! If u dont like people catching and releasing fish then why are u on a site where alot of people practice and post it!!!

No Problem from Me beau

Different people go fishing for different reasons beau and the term sport fishing is regarded by some folks as a dirty word as compared to Recreational fishing. Not a lot of difference between the two but it's just the image you project to the do-gooders.

When I said that people consider them a shit fish I was refering to thier taste, the reason I want to target them is because they provide a challenge, extracting them from the rocks on light gear.

Better get my two cents in...

Thu, 2011-07-28 05:22

...before Adam shuts it down. At the risk of big tough Fathom swearing on the internet again (ooh we're all scared, what, are you 12?), if you're only in it for a feed, why not get rid of the boat/4wd/fishing gear and simply buy your fish? That way the rest of us have more room at the boat ramps/beaches/jetties.

If you catch and release, the fish at least still has a chance of surviving. If you keep it, it will definitely die.

i remember quite a few years ago fishing for them at hillarys on weed or green peas(catch and release) they are very good sport and not targeted at all here compared to "silver drummer" on the east coast, but seriously some people on here need to go and see a doctor for some "pills" or treatment , get a life LOL!!  CHEERS

Yep, closing this one up.  Fathom (Vince) please mate, I've heard a fair few of your tirades over the years and let them go, but this is the last warning - chill it out or disappear - your choice.

Apologies to anyone that may have taken offence to this thread, I have left these comments here only to allow people to form their own opinions.
