The Busso Jetty Report 11-12-12

That is all for now, if things change before my next report I will post ( such as a good tailor run ) so keep an eye on this space.
Happy fishing everyone and tight lines.
The stormy weather over the past month has made fishing difficult at times turning the water murky and making clumps of weed float on the surface. Despite the bad conditions a good feed of fish can still be caught if you work for it. There is plenty of snook and pike hanging around the pylons in the late afternoon to early evening and are best caught by trawling lures (walking) up and down the length of the jetty, alternatively they can be caught by throwing mulies at them in the early evening under the lights. Some large herring can be caught in the late afternoon along the last 3rd of the jetty in the two hours before sunset but you will have to work to catch them, trawling green lumo tube being the best way to get them to strike. There are signs that the tailor are finally starting to turn up after a month and a half of being scarce on the jetty due to the bad weather. A few medium sized tailor have been landed over the past week in the evening around 8-9 pm on the first half of the jetty but the run has been short so make sure you are not too late if you are wanting to target them. Hopefully over the next two weeks the tailor numbers should increase as the weather gets warmer and the waters clear up again. Squid numbers have been significantly down but the ones that have been caught have been of very good size, the numbers also should improve of the next few weeks. Crab numbers are very good at the entrance of the jetty but there have been heaps of females laden with eggs so if you are targeting them you may have to throw quite a few back. Sampson fish are still hanging around in good numbers and can even be found in as close as halfway out, I spotted 6 in one arvo last week. If you like to target stingrays and shovel nose sharks there are plenty on the bottom at the moment, just throw half a snook down on a heavy line and you should hook up.
That is all for now, if things change before my next report I will post ( such as a good tailor run ) so keep an eye on this space.
Happy fishing everyone and tight lines.

Can someone link a picture of the float rigs they use on the jetty?
We pretty much just send out a mullie on gangs without any sinkers and leave it out. And then play around with jigs for squid.
I notice a lot of people have float rigs that they cast and retreive and seem to do well.
Also, what bait are people using for Mulloway. We tried the beach near the cut for them last night but with the wind/chop it seems it would be easier on the jetty.
Any tips would be great.

I catch most of my tailor by sending out unweighted mulies on gangs and giving it a slow retrieve. It is the wrong time of year for the mulloway, the winter months are the way to go there.

What's the difference
What's the difference between a snook and a pike? I come from Esperance which has much more to do with south-australia fish than busselton/bunbury/perth. Even the herring look different over here. But the difference between snook and pike has always eluded me - I call them pike, (most) other people call them snook... is pike something else entirely? I know there's a freshwater pike in other parts of the world which is a completely different fish.

The difference is
There is two species of pike that are caught in southern waters. Pike are generally smaller and are good for live baits ,Striped sea pike (max 55 cms), long finned pike (max 90 cms). Snook are the larger ones ( max 1.1metres ).

Not easy to tell, had many a discussion on the jetty with the old boys about which is which. Snook tend to be more gold in colour. Cheers for posting that dude, didn't know what sizes they get to.

Also known as Striped Barracuda and Yellow-fin Pike, Striped Seapike are elongated streamlined silver fish with a greenish to golden/brown dorsal area fading to a silver belly. There is a yellowish to brown stripe from the snout tip to the caudal fin base and sometimes bars are present on the upper side. The caudal fin is dusky yellow. The mouth and eye are large. They are often confused with Snook, but Striped Seapike have a shorter body.
Striped Seapike grow to 55cms in length.
They are considered average eating.
Striped Seapike are found from Albany Western Australia, north around to Queensland then south to Sydney NSW.

Also known as Short-finned Seapike, Snook are long, streamlined silver fish with a greenish back and fins but along WA's coast can be purplish brown. The dorsal fins are far apart and short based, the first dorsal fin commencing well to the rear of the pectoral fin. The ventral fins are also set behind the pectoral fin. The first dorsal fin has 5 spines and the second dorsal has 1 spine and 9 soft rays. They have a large mouth with a protruding bottom jaw with strong fang-like teeth. They can be distinguished from Striped Seapike by the much longer body and the position of the first dorsal fin.
Snook grow to 5kgs and 1.1 metres in length.
They are considered very good eating with white, sweet flesh, although soft.
Snook are found from Jurien Bay Western Australia, around the southern coast including Tasmania, then north to southern Queensland, in waters to 20m.

Bonito is just terrible, any cooking tips would be great coz there are millions of them in the bay atm.

Any further reports?
I'm heading down to Busselton for Southbound next weekend and I was hoping to get plenty of fishing done either side of the festival. Last year I hit the jetty quite hard, but couldn't catch anything other than trumpeter after trumpeter! It was so frustrating!
If anyone has any hints and tips on how to catch anything other than bloody trumpeters then it'd be gratefully received! E.g. best areas of the jetty to concentrate on, times of the day, etc.... Also what sort of rigs are people using for the bonito? Are they receptive to lures? I have a fair arsenal of metals slices, crystal minnows, bluescodes, etc...
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks mate, I don't have any Jacks, but I imagine bluescodes and crystal minnows would work similarly! Would love to catch a bonito!
