Submitted by JIM1 on Wed, 2011-06-29 19:49
anyone been doing a bit of online shopping latley? big fan or like to shop local? picked up a 1300yd spool of big game for $18 the other day and just found some good looking squid jigs for about $1 each. i try to keep the purchases low incase it turns out to be a really crap item but ive also found alot of things not on offer in aus, keep the big ticket items for actual stores to help if a warrenty problem pops up/getting the real mcoy.
discuss!

Ebay braid
Got some braid off Ebay for what seemed a good price at the time but finished up dumping the whole lot of it. Found that as you went to set the hooks it went ping, anywhere from at the rod tip to the swivel, no signs of chafing or damage visisible on the line. Once I lost a few good fish that was enough to convince me,
Same goes for the cheap bargain reels, LD9000s, the anti reverse doesn't work after using them for a dozen times and having a look at the pawl when the reel was in bits found it was mounted on a plastic shaft not a stainless one to allow it to move freely.

When I can save over $400
When I can save over $400 dollars on a reel through Ebay then buying local I'll buy through Ebay. No offence to local dealers as they still get my business but with this sort of saving it's a no brainer. For a top quality reel it's highly unlikley you'll get any problems let alone $400 worth so I'm not concerned about warranty.

Stores here make more money
Stores here make more money out of hooks and smaller gear anyway. Markup on a small item can be like 500% but only like 10-20% on an expensive item. I buy heaps of gear online but stick to brands I know, but I still shop around and support the local guys.

I try to support local when i can, that is the key when i can. I rarly will shop at BCF/ranger/Anconda and will always support WA small local buisness.....
I was acutelly at a boat shop the other day, and when they didnt have what i was after, (toe bar lock) i said dam looks like im going to BCF, they werent to impressed with my answer. But what can you do i attempted going some where local, and its not my fault they didnt have stock....
Shopping online, yes I have done a little not to much, but i am intrigued in it, but it doesnt compare to face to face service/experience ESPEICALLY what oceanside provided me with last week, and i can guarentee my last shop before my trip nrth will be from there.

there is an issue with poXXX
there is an issue with poXXX prX braided too, a lot of fisho in asia got cheated when a spool of braided 1500yards selling for only $50 buck
and he bought different poundage like 20/25/30/50, and when he received, all are in same packaging and same serial number only to know that he has been cheated of a real make. and the line snap like a twig upon setting hook

Thats no good - however I have in the past purchased said PoXXX PrX braid online from the states for peanuts and the stuff was, as far as I can tell, completely legit and worked really well. I guess it's a risk you take

Still say you cant beat your local Tackle store for know how and advice, guys at oceanside certainly were of great assistance when i went down, i guess it depends on your budget and if your happy using your credit card online.... Im yet to havea problem with online purchases, other than a dodgey reel where the handle snapped off think it was a sambo elite lol but $15 what did i really expect haha

buy quality online
as others have said stick with the good brands online. I use fins PRT and have seen it advertised in a local shop for 3 times the price I regularly get it for, I can afford to support local at prices like that.
BTW this post pops up at least once a month

for simple check of the said poXXX prX
we found out that the fake model all have the same serial no on the box, be it size 20lbs till 50lbs and such
these guys could copied the exact box packaging and all the sticker plus the self spooling design for the box

We have all shopped overseas
We have all shopped overseas in the past but just think if and I am sure 95% of us do in our jobs relies on Australians to keep your business going, just think how the wee tackle store down the road feels, now picture yourself in the same position, support your locals where possible as they are there when you need something in a hurry or something you cant get overseas, I have read many a good things about Oceanside Tackle on this forum from happy customers so support locals as much as possible boys since they are there for you.

Totally agree Coxy
and the guys at Oceanside are great but that only applies to the metro guys, the service we get in the country is poor to say the least and the internet stores are the best service provider by a long shot.

Yeah agree with you there
the service over here on the Gold Coast is rather bad, need to travel up to Fish Head here to get good service.

Coxy: I agree with you as i
Coxy: I agree with you as i stated in my previous post i try to support local shops when i can! Oceanside is a great place and a great place for advice!
Matt: I also agree with 100% tackle stores around your area arnt the best when it comes to customer service , help etc etc.....ps. WE finally knocked off a top 4 team on their ground buddy! going to say wet toast are nothing anymore haha (i love some good footy banter mate just having a laugh) on a serious note im looking forward to the hawthron v geelong match going to be a ripper!!!
Support when i can but if i see a bargain on the internet, thats it. Unfortunately the likes of internet shopping are driving SMALL buisness owner's into debt but unfortunately theres nothing they can do due to their prices differences (with taxes n all)

Not all tackle stores down
Not all tackle stores down our way have poor customer service. The Dunsborough tackle store has some of the best customer service I have seen. Can very rarely walk into the store without someone asking you if you want help with anything. Yes they don't stock high end fishing or specialist type fishing gear but there is not really a huge demand for it to justify stocking it. Seen a lot worse in the metro where some of the people working at the stores don't have a clue about fishing and are not at all interested in helping you.

Agreed
The guys at Duns outdoors and Sportz are great. Issue is they have a limited selection. I always manage to spend money when I am there though....

Yeah spot on mate, good store that does its best to cover alot of bases just a pity about no McArthy's! Good range of advice on fishing from Dave & spearing from Damo, can't go wrong there. I have found the same with Ant down in Margs, goes out of his way to help so these are the guys that get my business.

i don't use braid only mono but the stuff i pick up off ebay is "good for a while" at the price i don't complain but i have noticed that after a couple of trips we now strip a bit off and start again. doesn't bother me though

I buy local
I live in Karratha and at times it can be hard to get hold of different bit and pieces ....but if I cant get here I get it sent up from Perth. Whilst the internet highway has certainly expanded the competive market you cant beat local service. If I have to pay a little extra for this service....well so be it.
Life is for fishing...so keep on living
