Buying a older hul 5mm plate Ali advice please

 https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/safety-bay/motorboats-powerboats/westerberg-runabout-5-10m/1150521571" rel="nofollow"> https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/safety-bay/motorboats-powerboats/westerberg-runabout-5-10m/1150521571

So have enough of tinny and time to step up to something bigger better.

Have a budget of 15-23k

And in Perth currently looking at a few boats. Taking the link above for a sea trial on Friday.  Has a bilge on it but wanted to know the best way to look for pinholes.

Being a older hull it had the inspection report for last year for insurance purposes and all checks out. Motor has done a few hours and doing a diagnostics on sat.

Any advice is appreciated

Hmmmm well in my opinion that would be the worst boat/motor combo around. Opinions are like arseholes though, most stink :-) Plenty of happy Westerberg owners will say they are great but the one I went in was the most horrible, broaching, wet, banging thing ive ever been on. plenty of good oldschool glass boats around that will eat that every day of the week.

90 is a bit underpowered for 5m. No pictures of the interior so i'd be checking in any hatches/under floor cavitys for holes or corrosion.

there should be a few hatches for you to look in and see most of the hull.  Electrolysis is usually right in the v of the hull.. Just make sure that there is not much white powder looking bumps in the Ali..  if so get a wire brush and scratch at the powder then get a torch and inspect the Ali

Not much need for glass boat in Broome if you ask me. Although a lot of boys launching 7m+ boats with out too many dramas

Those westies are a good boat from everything i have heard. Agree with motors sucks but

Older westerbergs were also known as wetterbergs, but having said that, you're not going to be punching into too much swell in Broome.

I reckon for the price that would be a good option. My dad has a 5m traily of a similar vintage with a 90 two stroke yamaha, goes well.

Westerberg

Wed, 2017-07-12 21:42

ive heard westerbergs are a great hull. Haven't ridden in one though. You could probably put any link up here to a boat your looking at buying and you will always get some negative feedback. My advice would be to just have a look at as many you can and make your own informed decision. I reckon I looked for atleast 6 months and a dozen or so boats. When the right one comes along you will know

For what it is worth, I have an Etec. Got one the same time as my old man got a Yammy. Mine is quieter and significantly more efficient. Last service it got all ticks.

Further, my boat is glass, and I regularly beach it to offload gear, but not for too long.

wouldn't stress about the hours on the motor. If serviced regularly 500 is bugger all. Plenty of blokes on here have well over 1000 hour motors that run perfectly, me included.  1100 on a 225 4 stroke and in perfect condition.

I would take my chances on a 60 Yam over a 90 etec :-)

(no offence to E-Tec owners - but having seen first hand what 300 hour service intervals can do to the internals of a 1000 hour motor - they are not for me!)

Totally agree regarding the etecs there's bugger all of them up here for a good reason. 60 is way underpowered for our tides, it would be dangerous in my opinion

Thu, 2017-07-13 09:59

My boat had an Etec and was repowered to 4s before I bought it. Another mate just changed a Etec which put a leg out of bed to a Susie 200 4S. I know of a couple of others too.... I personally woukld avoid Etec like the plague... Considering that the engine up to 40% odd of a boat purchase it is a massive consideration.

Had A Westy For 6 years

Thu, 2017-07-13 11:36

Buy it mate. I had a 5.4 Westy with a 90 Etec on it for 6 years so I can honestly say they are a great boat mate that punch well above there weight. I can also say they will eat a Trailcraft any day of the week as I have proof. My brother had a 5.7 Trailcraft fishing with me on more than 1 occasion in some rough weather off Exmouth and the Westy was dry compared to the Traily. Buy it.

Thu, 2017-07-13 12:37

There's nothing wrong with an ETEC. Those I3's are pretty bullet proof.

You will have to pay a bit for 2 stroke oil, especially because the evinrude XD100 oil is so expensive ($70 for 3.8 liters) but on the other hand they only need to be serviced once every 3 years/300 hours so you probably end up better off.

They are pretty good on fuel economy, comparable to 4 strokes and way better than old school carburetted 2 strokes.

They don't really smoke compared to carburetted 2 strokes, but there is a little bit of a oily smell to them.

They have better torque than 4 strokes, and will get up on the plane quicker than a 4 stroke.

I've got a v4 130 hp ETEC with 350 hours on it and never had any issues.

Westerberg

Thu, 2017-07-13 15:51

I have a Westerberg myself. Same shape but is 16ft or 4.9 metres (doesn't have the steps at the back and slighty different pod shape). It has a 70hp yamaha 2 stroke on the back and takes me anywhere i need to go. Use it to pull pots in summer at rotto and have taken north to Lancelin, Ledge and Dirk Hartogg etc. I cannot see myself selling this boat in the near future as it does everything I need it to do. I have travelled in a couple of Genesis's and another custom build extensively and the ride of the Westerberg is second to none. I can get wet from time to time but who doesn't in a boat this size when the SW'er or NE'er kicks up. I can not comment on the engine as I have not owned an Etec. The one downfall that the boat has is the height of the gunwhales, they are pretty low and would prefer higher when fishing. On the other hand they are perfect for jumping over the edge when diving or pulling pots. I can honestly say if the hull is sound you will be happy with the boat.

Good luck, cheers.

good boat

Thu, 2017-07-13 19:21

i have one of those westerberg bandits, 5.2m is the size actuallly. and i have 90 yammy on it, does 30kn easy. i go out 20 mile in fairly rough conditions, 15 to 18 kn eastlies would be starting to get pretty uncunfortable.

biggest con for me is there is no way to put a bilge pump in without cutting some seriouse holes in the boat and secondly having a 90 on the back is to heave for what it was designed for. scuppers are under water when fishing out the back so be prepared for wet feet.

use it in perth and is fairly dry for the style of boat, so i dont get why people say there wet. i think it does bang quite hard although any ali boat in that 5m run about catagory will.

great boat
