Cairns tips?

Hey guys,

I might be heading to Cairns with the family in October.  Hoping  to check out the rainforest, definitely hit the GBR, and also up for some fishing.

To any of you who have been there or lived there I'd love some advice on:

  1. fishing charters?  Not too interested in marlin, looking more towards GTs, mackies, tuna...that sorta thing.
  2. snorkeling charters?  Who do ya recommend?  My wife and I would be up for snorkeling.  My parents are a bit older and would be probably be more interested in staying dry.  They might have a snorkel in very safe, calm conditions.
  3. Other points of interest that we shouldn't miss?  Again, remember my parents are older and probably aren't up for anything too strenous.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Cairns Trip

You would have better fishing if you could go north of Cairns to Port Douglas or Cooktown where the reef is much closer to shore and not quite as hammered. Port Douglas also has close access to pristine rainforest and great family snorkling trips to ther outer reef.

Mate every second shop up there books snorkelling trips with Green Island the most popular place. Just pick the tour that suits your price and time availability.
Port Douglas is worth the drive and Cooktown is definetly worth going to if you can make it up there (big day trip return). If you can over night it in Cooktown there's a reef fishing charter that runs from there.
Not sure about GT charters, there's one guy who runs charters in the creeks and I've seen him catch some good barra on livies right in Cairns itself. Pop down to marlin marina and you'll see all the boats and A frame signs for charters.
