Casting rod to suit Stradic/Sustain 8000

Gday all,

currently looking at rods that will cast 60-100g lures (poppers and stickbaits) effectively, preferably with a stiff tip. Will be running 50-80lb braid for some fun on either a Stradic or Sustain for GT's, tuna etc... I'm not expecting to stop anything huge and I know I will be severely undergunned in some situations but that's all part of the fun. Will be fishing from a boat and from shore. Anything around $400 for what I want it for?

Cheers in advance.

Was going to offer you my Daiwa Saltist rod but it's 9'6" which is a bit long for boat. Rated 40-60lb. You have a lot of choices in your price range.

Seems really a bit much to expect an 8k to handle 50-80lb? I have a stradic 8k and it takes 300yds of 30lb braid. You won't be getting much 80lb on. Whats the drag top out on that size?

OTOH, I have an daiwa emcast, it did a good job chucking lures up at exmouth. Only ever used for 1 week and for sale.

t-curve bluewater

but if memory serves me correctly, you'll need to go to a 15 - 24kg  (7 and a half foot long) model to fling lures that heavy - by that stage if you are gonna just target some tuna and GT's, then you'd start getting into GT special area I guess?

Me personally I bought a 7' 6-10kg t-curve with a twinpower 4000 and 30lb braid for doing pretty much what you have in mind (flicking lures from the boat and piers for tuna, queenies etc) when I went to Exmouth.

50lb - 80lb for tuna will not be much fun - you'll knock them over far too easily and 30lb wont be enough to stop most GT's from a shore fishing situation in reefy ground (might be OK in open oceans). I dont think you'll find a best of both worlds in one combo IMO.

Both the 8000 Stradic's and Sustain's drag are stated to top out at 13kgs but I don't think I will come to using that much at any stage and will be upgrading to carbontex for peace of mind. The reel will be used as an all-rounder which is why I will be going the 8k.

The rod will be mainly used for casting poppers at GT's and will be handy when coming across a school of 20kg+ yellowfin.

Re: rod length - I think between 7 and 8' would be ideal and the TCurve is looking pretty good right now in that department.

Other rods I've been looking at is the Nitro Godzilla and The 7' Daiwa Monster Mesh. What are everyones thoughts on them compared to the TCurve?

I know it's going to be hard finding the best of both world and I appreciate the opinions so far.

Thanks again.

We have both Tcurve and Monster mesh and even though our versions are for jigging I cant fault either one. Gillian uses the Monster mesh and you try and get that out of her hands, whilst I have the Lacunas version jig.

Love em, but obviously youll have to change to the slightly different version to our jig stix

I've got a Shimano Kingmack

I've got a Shimano Kingmack spin with a Sustain 8000 loaded with 30lb braid. An awesome setup and probably my "go to" combo. I use it for throwing poppers and metals, and also for trolling. Landed YFT to 25kgs macks to 20kg.

Cheers Mick
