Mate you can't really compare those two a.. Compare a 6500 saltiga to a 20000 stella.. But then it's personal preference.. I like Stella's IMO they have better drags which for me is the most important thing in that size reel and what I'm fishing for..
to do those things you will certainly need to stick to the 6500/ 20 000 size. try both see which one you like because they wil both do the job. I would personally go the catalina but recommend you get the stella because they are easier to sell if you ever need to- something not everyone thinks about before they lay out their cash.
*Just going to add that my suggestion has the ballooning in mind. That's why you need that size reel. Otherwise, see below for the other bits of advice*
Personally I would go a couple of different reels for all the uses you put up.
ballooning best done with overhead
GT's the reels you've mentioned are good (prefer a high speed reel though) but only if you are going Vanuatu, Fiji or monties etc.
Macks and (local and north Tuna) a 6500/20 000 reel is just overkill. Macks may peel a bit of line but nothing in them really. unless you are going for big Bluefin south. 50KG plus
bottom bashing ..you are just not going to want to use a reel of that size.
all just MY opinion though.
if you have your mind set on one of the reels you have mentioned though. I would go the stella. both very good reels and you wont be disappointed with either but ...as already mentioned I think the drag is better on the stella. and Shimano have a very good aftersales service which is always handy when forking out $1K
Kingfisha have you actually looked at the prices of the reels mentioned? Its probably none of my business but you look like you're still in school, these reels are big bucks for someone so young!
Mate if you've been saving the money and you have your heart set on one of these reels (and I totally understand wanting a reel like this) then for me the Catalina would be the best choice. Doesn't have the big price tag of a Stella or Saltiga, but for all intents and purposes it's still a super spinner. JasFishing mentioned Alan Hawk's review above which highlights just how good these reels are. Plus, compared to the price of the Stella, you'll have plenty of cash left over for good quality braid and maybe even a nice rod.
For what it's worth though, the sizes you've mentioned are pretty big reels. A 5000 Catalina will handle just about everything you could ever throw at it.
They are tough, have a long warranty, and to be honest - most people who own the big ones don't fish them very often, so they've usually seen minimal work. This is primarily because the big ones are overkill for any Perth fishing and so they usually only get used a couple times a year for trips abroad / up north. Of course there are exceptions, you'll find people who use a 20k stella every week for bottom bashing the 3 mile, but you can usually pick those reels a mile away.
I would also suggest looking at a Penn Torque. Going back to Alan Hawks reviews and the Torque fairs better than the Catalina. It will be cheaper and easier to maintain as well.
Mind you if you are after a big reel and want to save some money the Fin Nor Lethal looks like a hand down winner.
Have two Catalina's (4500 & 6500) both are fantastic reels but I have upgraded the drags to carbontex washers.
Stella are obviously better but as they say you get what you pay for and there is a fair price difference between the two. (I think they charge extra just for the fact they are named after females and largely aimed at the male market)
Fin Nor and Saragosa's are also quite capable reels in their own right. Penn Torque aren't bad and are an extremely good reel for the price that will take the knocks etc. in their stride.
Personally in your circumstances I'd save some biccy's and grab a Saragosa/Fin Nor or Penn rather than the Cat or Stella.
quite simply you can get 2 for the price of the Stella. I have the Cat 5000 and a little stella 5000. lov them both but the Cat, at $650 is 1/2 the price of the stella.
or as suggested the get the cat and spend the other 650 on a good rod and Braid.
Yeah this is pretty good advice if you do have your mind set on one of these reels.
I have one stella (SW08 model)but when I bought it ...couple of years ago the price difference between the Cat and Stella was only $100. (750 Cat or 850 Stella)
to me then it was a no brainer but now the price difference is pretty big.
You will hate the SW20,000.....they are huge and heavy and complete overkill for everything except pulling up the anchor. I have bought and sold 2 (they do have that certain appeal on the bench....).
Get a SW8000PG and put a bigger spool on (16,000 SOM good), heaps lighter and will knock over almost anything at 20,000 will.
Also, if you have your heart set on a Stella, and you have the saved up cash, just buy one......the Catalina will do almost everything the Stella will do, at half the price, but its a bit like the guy sitting at the stop lights in his Porsche Cayman, when a Porsche 911 turbo rocks up next to him........
Most mackies on spin max needed is a saragosa 6-8000, and that is overkill. Reverted my baloon rig for macks to a Barra rig with a Curado and it was heaps more fun.
Bottom bashing a 8000-10000 Anything will do. Had to skull drag quality fish away from Gray coats so used A stella 10000, then 8000.
The popping for GT the 10 was adequate unless you hooked a real Gbus. Then it was a huge struggle, but still won most battles, but also got bricked.
Unless going to NZ and jigging for huge YTkings wouldnt go near the very heavy big reels.
After returning from Karratha havent even used the Stella 8-10000 at all.
I think the idea of getting 2 reels is something you should consider. I had no intentions of selling it but I have a Saragosa 14000 here in new condition as I thought I would need it jigging for sambos but its way too big. Used once and the previous owner used it a couple times from the beach before he realised it was too big for him too. I got it fully respooled with pe6 Daiwa Boat Braid 300m+. send me a pm if you're interested. Would leave you enough cash for a Catalina 4000 and almost a rod.
Nobody can accurately answer questions like that.
however it's not often you get spooled by GT's (not like big tuna.....doh) it's usually just a tug of war with GT's.... and don't let them reef you. (especially from land where when you don't have a good skipper to help) so most times it makes no difference if you have a 5000 reel or a 6500 reel. if they both put out the same drag ...you have a great rod and..... you can hold onto the dam thing to turn them.
FWIW if you are landbased fishing for GT's in West Aust A 5000 (Daiwa) reel or 10000( shimano ) reel IMHO should do you.

But if you are going out to target GTs, you should not (in my opinion) use anything smaller than a Stella 10,000. Ideal is a 10k with 16k spool, or an 18k if you are fishing in areas where the fish are BIG.
My opinion is that the most versatile stella body is the 8k/10k one. Find a used one of these, and with an 8 or 10k spool on it you can use it for bottom bashing or jigging (if you are feeling strong with the high gear ratio other than on the PG models) or if you need more capacity, you can grab a Yumeya/JM/SOM spool for it and take it balooning or GT fishing.
I say that because the 5k body and the 18/20k body are both specialised tools. The 5k for light spinning, the 18/20k for very heavy jigging or popping (depending on whether you get the high ratio 18 or low ratio 20) and pitching baits to billfish.
I've caught GT's the size of volkswagons, I only used a penn 850 if my memory serves me correctly, that or a beefed up Shimano TSS4. I have never owned either and i never will. Too much $$ I have a older 8000 Saragosa which has taken a hammering macks, gts, king's, smallish tuna, big dhus reds etc etc. Best $250 i ever spent.
If you want a solid big reel why not have a look at the saragosa 10000sw 15kgs of drag pressure is a hell of a lot, not quite 25kgs the stella has.
its too light, get a 25,000. better suited to your needs.

One thing worth considering is the catalina is probably alot more bang for your buck if price is of consideration (let's be honest it always is).

Catalina 5000or an 08 stella
Catalina 5000
or an 08 stella 10000 with a 16000 spool will do for all but the BIGGEST GTs /doggies
ballooning as stated is o/head work
i d suggest a smaller size than the 20000/6500
i have caught a close 35 kg gt on a stella 10000 as well as some sailies -no issues
i d rather buy the catalina than the new stellas though( i have both)

I'd suggest getting a second hand stella.
They are tough, have a long warranty, and to be honest - most people who own the big ones don't fish them very often, so they've usually seen minimal work. When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I've caught GT's the size of volkswagons, I only used a penn 850 if my memory serves me correctly, that or a beefed up Shimano TSS4. That was out of a boat and at one of the shipping channel markers coming out of Port Headland. So just like the old adage, you can catch a whale on a whiting hook but not a whiting on a whales hook.

Check out Alan Hawk's review on Daiwa Catalina.
As good as the Saltiga and a hell of a lot less dollars.
