Catalina Bay, North Head.. just north of Jurien - info please.

Hey guys, Im looking to head north for a few days with my g/f for a spot of sight seeing and fishing. Hust checked Google Earth and came accross Catalina Bay.. looks like it could be worth a shot.

Anyone got any information on this area, access to spots and camping facilities..?

Or any other ideas for spots that i would be better off giving a go from the beach up around there.. Im keen to get out on the rocks if there are some good spots around there.

Cheers, Any info is much appreciated.

George.

Just make sure you're not on that South facing bay unless you're going to sandbag your tent.

Sandy Cape

Last time i was up that way in 2006 we stayed at Sandy Cape(just up the coast a bit further in line with the big sand dunes) There is a nice camping ground setup there(used to be all beach shacks friend used to own one, sorely missed), toilets(long drops). Some spots are shaded very well and are hidden from the relentless afternoon seabreeze.

We did do a drive down to Catalina bay, but there was no facilities there at the time. There were some little pockets were you could see other people had camped. Looked to be good if you were self sufficient and wanted to get away from the crowds. You can get a 2wd into Sandy Cape so it does get packed at times. And like till said stick to camping on the northern sides of the heads, as the SW sea breeze smashes in most afternoons in summer.

Did some beach fishing, got heaps of herring and sand whiting. Chanced a few legal tailor one evening.

If you do get up there and want to do a bit of exploring have a search around the tracks between Catalina Bay and Sandy Cape. There are old Bunkers and Gun Positions put in during WW2 in response to Japanese food rations found cached on the beach. When we were there in 2000 we actually managed to find some of these ration tins with Japanese writing on them and even old Japanese ammo. Bit of history forgotton or never told i guess.

Great place up there anyhoo, great fishing, snorkelling and playing on the big dunes. Hope you get up there and you love it as much as i did.

What a beautiful area... too

What a beautiful area... too bad the fishing is as shit as the scenery is beautiful!

will definatly be putting that area on my list to head back to as a base, and if possible will drive well away from that area every day to try and find the fish. Saw a few nice sized fish well out the back and in amongst the reef whilst snorkling.. just not possible to get them fishing from land. :(

Could get stuck into small tailor and herring.. buts thats not the aim of the game.
