Catching longtails in the sound???

So in the last few years i have had a fair few attempts at bust ups of longtails. Casting my stickbaits and minnows smack bang in the middle of them and absolutley nothing!!!! not even a follow. Have had live hezzas in amongst them and not a touch. Trolled for them and nothing.

So my question is. How on earth do you tempt these longtails in perth??? Iv seen a few landbased ones landed but very few.

Chrome slices like halco

Chrome slices like halco twisties work for us up here. Tuna are usually found on bait schools of tiny fish so match what they are eating. and wind flat out they move around real quick

+ 1 on dropping the lure size

+ 1 on dropping the lure size to match the hatch and winding quick, you won't out wind a tuna and speed turns them on.

They have very good eyesight and the speed also helps stop letting them getting a good look at the lure.

Bluewater do some nice weighted mini slicers

Tue, 2016-03-01 07:22

 called ARMA's

they are nice and small yet with really good cast weight for their sizes, I would recommend getting a few of those and running a 30-40lb fluorocarbon leader. That at least gives you the best fighting chance at landing one of these bad boys.

 Iv casted smallish

Tue, 2016-03-01 07:34

Iv casted smallish stickbaits but the bait they feeding on is bream sized lures Hahaha.  Can try a tiny 10 gram twisty with assist?  Lite may not be strong enough. Been using lifht fluro so must be lure change needed but too light and I can't get good distance. Long tails in perth super flighty. In exmouth they were quite easy for me. Pain in the ass it's hurting lollll

20-30 gram twisties =lots of

20-30 gram twisties =lots of flash and splash like the baits they're feeding on. and as dodgy said small pushers run a long way back and troll round the school so the lure cuts through. Frustrating fish at the best of times.

longtails

Tue, 2016-03-01 09:40

Try the sea iron super sprats in 21 grams with 30 lb fluro, they cast like a bullet and can be wound back as fast as possible without breaking out. Haven't used them for longtails but work a treat on ytk's, shark macks and smaller tuna when they are eating tiny bait fish. Just upgrade the hook

+1 on the sea iron super

+1 on the sea iron super sprats. They are small, heavy and cast like a bullet.

The 21g and the 40g are about all i use up north for tuna bust-ups. The longtails love them when they are locked onto tiny baitfish.

Have caught a couple of bonito in the past few weeks on the 21g's.

I buy mine from Compleat angler Nedlands.

I'll be heading in Thursday to re-stock and to look for any other micro casting jigs.

Plastics

Tue, 2016-03-01 09:46

tried soft plastics yet? I know a large amount of guys over east use 3"-5" jerkshads in either pearl or pink. Don't think the jighead weight is a big deal so I imagine you could match the cast weight of the rod. Might be worth a shot

I killed it casting soft plastics into the tuna schools up north when they were cagey. White 5 inch flickbait with as little weight as possible (just a hook if you can reach). I use the same technique for Salmon who are shy.
