Catching occies from shore

Guys im looking for some fresh occy for a feed as well as bait. I have hooked them by accident on occasion but im looking for a more reliable method. I have read a bit about a method used in other countries where red strips of cloth are tied to either a gaff or 2 large hooks on some heavy line. This is dropped into rock holes on low tide in hopes the occy comes out to defend his hole and you can jag him.

Anyone heard of this before?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

A guy at work goes down to mandurah rocks looks for holes that have crab remains around it then dangles a fish infront of it then when the occy comes out he giddgies it

 This might sound strange,

This might sound strange, but on Robson Green's Extreme Fishing, they used a watch to reflect ligeht into where the octopus was, then it came out and they grabbed it, but a safer method would be to gidgee it.

Occys love things flashing,

Occys love things flashing, when diving if you flash reflections off a knife into a hole if there is an occy he will come out and grab the knife, then it is as simple as cut its head off.

However to my knowledge the easiest way is a occy pot (100mm PVC with holes in it and a mirror on the back end) put these along the rocks and leave them there for a day or 2, pull and you may be lucky...

Go in low tide to rocky areas

Sun, 2011-04-17 19:43

Go in low tide to rocky areas / small reefs and look for holes - put your arm / hand in the water infront of the hole - as close asyou can get - wiggle your fingers - 60 seconds - if there is a occie if will come out to inspect - they cannot resist the movement. If nothing in 60 seconds - move on to the next hole. Once the you have 1 leg sucking on a finger - occie is yours.

(caught 1 like this on the north wall / reef area of mindarie marina.)

(I suppose the stick method with red strips - for a lot of movement will also work.)

Skin dive on moorinigs. Few

Sun, 2011-04-17 20:35

Skin dive on moorinigs. Few tricks to get them out of the hole you'll have to learn. But a small gaff hook can work as you need to get it behind them to pull them out. I use a secret method which I have been taught and just gidgee them, but pretty simple really once you get the hang of knowing where they lurk and how to get them.

They go really well pickled.

cheers for the advice guys,

@ Spence, yea absolutely beautifull pickled. Started this thread thinking of using some larger ones as slide baits for big winter rays but then remembered how good they taste lol.

Will give some ideas a shot and see how it goes.

Thanks!

I don't know what you mean

Sun, 2011-04-17 21:03

I don't know what you mean by larger....as those specimens I get are around the 4-5kg mark. 2-3kg is pretty standard most the time. I think the ray would lose a battle against the bigger models live haha. I know my gidgee and arm does. haha

lol yea sorry I meant larger

Sun, 2011-04-17 22:25

lol yea sorry I meant larger compared to the ones I see in fish shops and keep to eat eat. im thinking 2kg is prob about the max id use as bait as they dont have huge mouths. Even that is probably be over doing it... Guess if I come across a big one ill get 2 baits out of it

Jeez 5kg, I wouldnt be taking on a beast like that while in the water anyway lol, your crazy! If all else fails ill go and buy some. At least its a nice tough bait that should last a few hours.

Cheers
