Catching Pike (how?)

After seeing the Pike pic on here it sparked my interest.Years a go I remember my old nan&pop used to catch a few out the front of Duns.

I have never tried myself and was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on the best way to catch them? From memory they used to troll with para veins and baits? What are the best water depths, bottom type, trolling speeds etc? Are they any good on the chew?

Any other pearls of wisdom you could pass onto me would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Snook or pike? it goes on

Sat, 2013-08-17 18:59

This has caused more fights than a shelia, more bustups than the footy, and more bullshit than at a dairy farm

Every secound publication names them different and most people call them what there dear old dad called them.

We go on pike are less than say a foot long , lighter coloured and do smell a bit.

Snook on the other hand grow to 3 to 4 foot long , are darker and taste better than most give credit.

Theres some great snook trolling around the south west and perth, and we always targetted them over mixed sand and weed.Best depths for slow trolled lures around 2-3 knots was

3-5 metres.

Best lures at the time were nilsmaster invisibles around 100mm long in a darker colour. We caught them to around 3kg around carnac and in the sound

and were a welcome adition to our squid and hezzas.

They catch some monsters in south oz, where they are highly reguarded chewing wise.

We did try para vanes etc etc over the years but with so many good lures that go deep it wasnt worth it.

By not using lures  any bigger than 10cm or so the small trebles hook up better in those hard toothy gobs.

We used 2-4kg line but dont expect to many screaming runs as they give up quicker than a eastern states afl team in a final.

good luck. ( just looked at web , sa fisheries says grows to 1.5 metres and 6kg!! with a bag limit of 20 and a boat limit of 60!,, holy overload of snook fillets bat dude)

snook are tasty

Sun, 2013-08-18 09:43

i agree, snook are a very underrated table fish. Just be careful handling and cleaning them, very soft flesh but it does turn firm once cooked. Easy to scale, fillet, prepare and tastes a bit like a whiting or flathead IMO. Any over half a metre comes home, others make great bait

Cheers for the info quadfisher and also Nathan. I thought they were out on that patchy stuff. I also readed in a mag that they were good on the fang.

I really appreciate the sharing of knowledge again cheers.

 Went trolling up at Grey

Sat, 2013-08-17 19:52

Went trolling up at Grey years ago and caught the about a metre long. Just used Mulies on a long leader. Tasted good cooked up whole in foil. Must do it again one day with the boys. And yeah it was only around 5m of water over the weedy ground.

I caught one a while ago

Sat, 2013-08-17 20:00

I caught one a while ago while inshore reef bashing for pinkies. Went around 1m long and after hearing reports of them being quality table fare, I necked it and put it in the ice slurry along with my pinkies. When I filleted it, I noticed it to be really oily with a strong smell. Cooked it up and after eating it, promised myself that I'd never take another one again. Just my opinion.

Yeah Ive caught some big ones

Sat, 2013-08-17 20:09

Yeah Ive caught some big ones over a metre in SA, usually trolling broken back style lures or as Quadfisher says Nilsie slow rolling Barra lures, usually over reef and weed beds. Ive never eaten one as the general story was they weren't good to eat, full of worms etc. But others would say they were ok if eaten fresh. We used to fish for them for fun although they didn't fight much for their size.

Very easy to catch, just

Sat, 2013-08-17 22:17

Very easy to catch, just about any surface lure will do the trick. Gang hooks with just about any bait will also do the trick. I have even caught them on herring straw.   I use them as tailor bait, the best tailor bait in the ocean even better than mulies.

 Recantly caught some nice

Sun, 2013-08-18 07:09

Recantly caught some nice Snook (short finned pike) down south on stickbaits. They smash the surface lures and sometimes missiled out of the water like a mack when trying to hit the lures. Have heard people troll deeper diving lures for them also though. Have never caught any metro before though but I'd be give the surface lures a go as they make for some visual excitement to make up for the rather poor fighting qualitys.

Also the Snook (short finned pike) get bigger and taste great with a nice white flesh where as the Pike (long finned pike) don't grow so big and are much smellier and oily with a sort of grey flesh that makes a great bait.

Snook will take almost any

Mon, 2013-08-19 18:45

Snook will take almost any lure, just need to get it down and just above the weed beds were they are lying in wait to ambush.  Get some big ones here in SA sometimes up to a metre or more and fat too.  If off a jetty will often pick them up on the egde of the light at night.  They do not freeze well but not too bad fresh (better fish in the sea though).  Smoke up pretty good though and not bad bait due to the oils.  Used to catch them on old nilsies and wonder wobblers or any metal lure.  Manns 5+ and 10+ also work but they are not that fussy.  Gouple of ganged hooks and a peice of rag or fish strip will work well.  Slower troll speeds work best
