Charter first time, sea sickness possible?

Hi all forum members, this is my first post on this forum although I have been reading this forum for few years now. This forum with lots of insightful posts had a profound effect on me in becoming an amateur fisherman in my own right and learnt heaps about fishing in general like what knots (no pun intended) to what lures and so on.

Here is my question, I came to Australia about five and a half years ago from a landlocked mountainous country and therefore never got in a boat. Few months ago I thought I will go on a charter boat to do some fishing and got everything ready just short of paying and then pulled out because I was not too sure if I will get sea sickness or not. So I was wondering if the sea sickness is similar to car sickness and if you will get sea sickness even if you do not in cars? Also if I do decide to go ahead, what are the best way to avoid if possible or atleast control getting sea sick? Any advice is welcomed and once again, thanks you all heaps for wonderful posts.

Half a Travacalm an hour

Sun, 2016-12-25 15:07

Half a Travacalm an hour before you head out and another half at the ramp and you should be sweet mate.

If you're out on a charter and get sick I can't see them coming back in for you when there's other paying customers on the boat so I wouldn't risk it if you think you'll get sick. I've been full blown sea sick in high school after eating a pizza and then getting on a dive charter boat and heading over to Rotto in big seas and it is terrible. It was made worse by the fact that one of the chicks in my outdoor ed class vomitted into the box of mask and snorkels.

 Heĺlo FishingBhutan,

Mate I suffer the sea sickness pretty bad .... I have found my best cure to be a product called Piha Sea Sick Bombs.

It is a remedy made in  New Zealand.

Google is your friend, they now do web orders but you can always ring and hand the CC details and I have had them ship to Perth in 3 days.

Good product. .. won't get in a boat without them

 Ginger tea. Eat something

Ginger tea. Eat something but not too heavy. See if someone can take you out for the day in the fishing buddies section and split the bill for bait fuel etc. Might learn a few things also as well.

Great stuff. Thank you guys. I get the impression, chemical is the go. Will go see the GP for them chemicals. Meanwhile, thanks sphere for that idea. Will look around for someone with a boat kind enough to take not-so-sure-about sea-sickness guy for fishing. I will do my part and keep my breakie/lunch/dinner small and colourful just in case :)

Unfortunately, I stopped drinking few years ago to heed to someone's advice about chucking a bottle or two at the docks :(

Anyway, merry christmas, happy holidays and may the forces of fish get confused on their way and head straight to your juicy baits on shiny hooks.

 Kwells also work. Just follow

Sun, 2016-12-25 19:34

Kwells also work. Just follow the directions but they do tend to dry your mouth out a bit. No prescription needed.

Plus one for kwells

Sun, 2016-12-25 22:05

They are a very old travel motion sickness tablet, however if you strictly follow the instructions on the bottle they work well at least they did/do for me. As I said they are an old product and there are plenty of new potions and pills on the market now. I think if you use common sense and don't get on the grog the night before most of them work pretty well. Stay well away from anything that has the warning may induce drowsiness you don't wont to sleep all through your trip.
So far as being brought back in if you are sea sick and as sick as a dog, forget it the charter skipper is not even going to entertain the idea.
good luck with the charter.

Milk Products

Mon, 2016-12-26 15:39

Stay well away from milk, cheese etc, they curdle in your stomach and will make you sick.

As others have said, ginger works a treat, no piss the day before and even on the trip [makes you blow bubbles out of your nose when you spew] but if you are going to be sick then eat pineapple. That way you are going to taste it twice for the same price except the second time its hot

Mon, 2016-12-26 16:01

As you are not sure or not if you do get sea sickness give it a go before you take anything and see how you go.

Like Salty2 said, keep busy and watch the horizon as much as possible, if you do start to feel off then maybe take something.

If you do feel sick then another cure is to get into the water..........Probably not practical on a charter boat though !!

Book the charter and good luck

If you start to feel sick

Mon, 2016-12-26 19:25

If you start to feel sick it is too late to take any of the preventive measures for sea sickness. Keep taking small sips of cold fresh water to prevent dehydration and keep it down as long as possible.
I don't wish a dose of sea sickness on anyone, it is a crappy feeling. Also if you are stricken with it remember which side of the boat to throw up on you don't want it to blow back into your face.

Kwells and the cans of ginger beer.

Mon, 2016-12-26 19:58

The Kirk's ones I find better than Bundaberg.

Eat gingernut biscuits too.

And make sure you pop more kwells 30 mins before the max useful period of first dose. Works well.

Thank you all so much for the advices. Much appreciated.
I am thinking ezy charters, are they any good? I have seen their boat at Hillarys harbour once when I was chucking some mullies at the dock some evening and their boat look considerably smaller than Mills charter for instance. My idea of charter is that less people, less congestion and more fish and small boat means less people. Any other recommendation for charters? Also what time of the year will be good for that?

Wed, 2016-12-28 09:21

+100 kwells, take 1 30-45 mins before you board. Then a second tablet just before you board. No good once you get crook thou - only thing that works once youre crook is fresh air or go for a dip. I only ever get green/ sick if I'm hung over or really tired so my suggestion would be a really good nights sleep the night before.

Like Krusty says you might acually be ok and not suffer anything. For me Kwells work well, just one. I tried travacalm once and ended up being a spaceman for the day lol. They all affect us different I guess.

Ive hooked up to a fish while chucking and it sorted me out pretty quick.

Dont be weak and retreat to the cabin, keep fishing!

Two rocks north for better catches I reckon.

Thank you all for the advices. I went out on a friend's boat past Rotto on Monday to fish. Took one travelcalm 30 minutes before boarding and seem to work. We got to our place (I havent a clue where) and started fishing. Withing five minutes, caught two red coloured fish and then started smelling breakfast behind my throat. The dry mouth didnt help either. Took another travelcalm to no use. Well, looking at my kalahari mouth and tropical eyes, my friend decided its best we head back and the moment we entered freo, sickness is gone but I was left with a terrible headache and the driest mouth.

Anyways, good news is I did not throw up and my friend was proud.

I will try again in a couple of weeks.

Fri, 2017-03-10 18:21

The advice I was given is to take a couple of Travelcalm the night before, one before you leave home and one when you get on the boat (I don't get seasick, it's the advice Drew from Jazz Charters gave me as the Missus wants to give fishing a go one of the days and he does have a bit of trouble with seasickness).

Make sure you drink plenty of water when you're out in a boat, you'd be surprised how de-hydrated the salt in the air makes you
