Chasing bream in the Swan
Hi folks,
I know there are a million and one threads on catching bream. I've done a bit of reading on the site and have not found any pattern in the info to answer my questions.
Have had a couple of sessions lately - yesterday towards Guildford and previously at Garrett Rd Bridge. Will be heading back to Garrett on Sunday hence the thread. I'm yet to catch my first blackie in the river.
I've been throwing baby vibes and micro vibes out and trying different techniques all for the same result. I've tried flicking around the pylons, into the channel, around the snags - but no hits. I've thrown the odd bait out too (river prawn) with no takes and have just invested in one of the diving scorpion lures to try something new. I've also picked up some soft plastics to try and match a few small "somethings" I saw swimming about yesterday in the river.
With the HB vibes for those who have had success is any particular technique better? eg fast retrieve, slow retrieve, flick, winding only...etc? Or is it a case of each to their own? No rain of late so I'm assuming the bream will not be contained in the deeper water.
Additionally, are tides a factor when chasing bream?
I can see me getting frustrated trying to catch these things so any advice would be appreciated.

keep at it mate, its something you will just have to keep persisting on, once you get your first one they will be alot easier after that.
make sure you are using light fluorocarbon leaders, 6lb is what i use, tie loop knots above your lures. i find slower techniques to work better for me
we have just got a good range of zipbaits and smith lures in at the shop which are great bream lures, drop in and have a look and im sure we can help you get into some fish

i tried garret road last sunday but didnt get there till about 10:30 we had a few hits on the jetty but only small
however the next day another user went alot earlier and they had a great seesions by the looks. i would try around 7:30 for that area . ive benn told casting a weighted prawn into the boat channel works. also if that doesent work in the middle of the two bridges work close to the pylons. unfortuantley last week the blowies were there to addict duffman fishes there alot so mayby hes the guy to talk to for more info
additionally ive been told with the vibes work them slowly and slow rod lifts but ive only just started using vibs

Hi mate
I have only ever caught black bream in the swan river on bait. Best baits i've used are small strips of bony herring and small chunks of mulie. Pipis work really good for me too but a bit soft and gets expensive. The bream never attack my baby vibes but I probably don't fish them with the right technique. I did have a 40cm bream maul my little yo-zuri squid jig one day though downstream which goes to prove they can be a very aggressive fish. Hope this helps.

Matilda bay
Try the Matilda bay area at night mate. Walk along the bank casting as you go. They were there in plague proportions the other night (like the blowies can be at times.) Bait like boney herring worked best the bigger models will take the lures if you willing to put in the time. Hold your rod and feedline once they're interested. Hope this helps catch you your first blackie mate.

Vary it up, i've only caught
Vary it up, i've only caught one on a lure so far but am just starting to get the hang of it now,
I've been told just to slow roll minnow style lures (sx40's zippys, halco etc)
Vibes just a lift, drop action.
Haven't had much luck on placcies yet but fish them like you would a vib.
Bream pros on the site will have better suggestions.

Hi mate,
As luke said, fish vibes slowly, cast them out, wait till it hits the bottom then give it a firm lift, about 1-2ft off the bottom and let them sink to the bottom again, all your hit's will come on the drop so make sure you watch your line for subtle takes!
You will have greater success with hardbodies when the water warms up towards summer but they still do catch during winter, make sure you fish them slowly with lots of pauses!
Scent such as x-factor is also a great help, especially on vibes! The swan can be very hot and cold, some days you will struggle to get in contact with the fish while on other days they go nuts!

buschy tides to play a big role with the bream fishing IMO
even when you are fishing as far up as Guilford. I have fished up around that area for 20 odd years and I would definately say that the best sessions I have had are around the change of tide, particulartly high tide.

Thank you all - off to Hill River tomorrow for a beach session (c'mon tailor!) but will now look to Sunday (somewhere other than Garrett Rd) with renewed endeavour.
I'll practice my bimini and get the wind on leader sorted and get out early to make sure I hit the high tide.
I actually met Duffman a while back - nice guy and I'm sure I will see him around the traps again soon!
These bony herring have me fascinated. I'm determined to catch them as they seem to be a great bait for just about anything in the river. I might try some tiny baits on unweighted fly hooks if I can find them schooling.
