Cheap GPS?
Submitted by octopus on Tue, 2009-12-08 19:31
Im looking at buying my first gps to be used around the 3 mile and cockburn sound.
Was wondering if anybody has used the Magellan Blazer 12 and recommends it? or can anyone recommend a decent cheap gps? thanks

So far in my experiance cheap and GPS don't go in the same sentance. Especially if you want maps. I have been hunting the navman / northstar ones on ebay for a while now and half the time they sell for more than retail! I rekon I will get one of the basic northstar models for about $430 at whitworths. (already have the map card!)

thanks for the info guys, the garmin etrax sounds just like what im looking for, something for just markin a few spots.
its my first boat and only had it a few months (14ft alum, runabout, 30hp, with a pirate flag) so i think ill start small and cheap and then build up from there.

handheld GPS
I have had a Garmin GPS72 for a while now and for a hand-held it is great. It's waterproof, it floats and easy to use.
If you want maps then you're probably wanting something bigger than a handheld anyway so you can see detail - but for less than $200 I reckon it's pretty good.

I second that. Garmin GPS72 $209 from bias or whitworths, can't remember. Cracking little unit. Waterproof is a bonus.

imo if your going to be
imo if your going to be looking at upgrading down the track you would be better off biting the bullet and getting a decent one at the start. there is a big range of middle market units around that will serve you well for a long time
