Epirb Prices

Hey Guys

New boat incoming, so I am going to need a few things. Firstly an Epirb, who has the deals going at the minute? Last had a GME, same is Ok.

Also need a sounder and GPS unit, maybe combo, maybe separate. Don't need to see fish so much as the shape of the bottom for diving. Thinking a smallish GPS but bigger finder. Probably $2k to spend on that. I had a Humminbird 788X on the last boat and it was good, but can see the value in 2 screens.

Any ideas or theories are welcome.

Humminbird do side imaging

Humminbird do side imaging scanners that would fit your budget. I wonder how well that would suit your purpose (in shallower water, you can see lumps without being over the top of them, so might help zero in on more interesting ground). Not sure if very high definition would be more useful though?

depends on what you want

humminbird side imaging has better definition than the new lowrance side imaging and which is yet to be released and wait for teething problems.....humminbird has more features and the humminbird is a good price against the $US.

plenty of humminbird combo units available and the shack had some recent specials

give them a call

I got a Raymarine unit at a very competitive price locally from Challenge Marine, just give Ryan a hard time over the price. It was at actually cheaper than importing one and I have taken advantage of the local warranty once - Ryan loaned me the shop demo.

Seperate units are far better Cammos especially when your trying to read it at speed.

The FCV620 colour sounder is good for disceting bottom structure and a straight GPS like the Furuno GP32 would be a good match.

As for EPIRBS, the GME do the job at $399-429 but we recommend spending the bit extra and get water activated 406, we're doing them for $449 for FW members

2 units

So 2 units are better for reading. Do you mean that the screens are bigger, or better laid out?

Why do you recommend the water activated? Like Rod, I don't see the upside.

Cammos, more screen to read which is paramount if your trying to discect bottom structure.

I see a big benefit in water activated, in an emergency its hard to think clearly and the water activation/very quick easy method being a big plus (unit has manual operation also)

Yeah get seperate screens

Tue, 2009-12-15 06:43

Yeah get seperate screens cammos, much easier to read 2 bigger screena than one big screen split in half. Stretch your budget as far as you can then double it for the sounder, bigger is better by a long way here mate.
