Furuno sounders
Submitted by Andy on Mon, 2009-12-14 18:07
Just a question about high end furuno gear. I have a customer wanting to install a good furuno sounder in a 28ft bertram. we are looking at a 3kw transducer mounted in a wetbox. Most of the fishing is done around 100m deep. If ryan or anyone in the know sees this could he recomend a head unit for this application and a tranducer or give some advice.
thanks andy

Andy, how much does your client want to spend $$$ including transducers - approx?

$$
I dont think money is an option, he wants something good quality, the boat has just had a 100k+ refit on engines and legs. So he is willing to spend coin on the boat.
cheers andy

In that case
Furuno FCV1150 with a 2kw 200khz which is for shallow stuff with awesome ground definition and 2kw 50khz for deeper water stuff - wetbox setup.

wetbox
That was the unit i had in mind. do you need to run 2 tranducers? and will 2kw perform well through a thick f/g hull.

go two
If he stays in shallowish water ie 120m & under he can get away with one 2kw 200khz but i would still put in a 50khz even if it was 1kw which isnt that expensive.
It will still go through that glass and perform, especially if the wetbox is mounted right.

Weve got a 2 kw 200 khz and
Weve got a 2 kw 200 khz and a 1kw 50 khz in a wetbox shooting through a glass hull with a fCV-295.Awsum gear .. . A 1150 would have been nice but just wouldnt fit on the dash, the uncle has a 1150 and loves it. The units are the same just different sized screens.

i'v got fcv-295 with the 2kw 200khz and 50 khz with wet box on a haines (has cost me about 8 grand so far) 200khz loses ground at about 2 mtrs (and thats with the gain at about ten) and the 50khz loses it's lock at about 115 mtrs can still read bottom but have to manualy find it. tried to get taylor marine to look at it but don't seem to return calls after first visit when they said it was the anti foul on the hull(sanded off with no differance)?

Get the salt water out
of your wet box, you'll grow fungus and it will distaught the reading.... Old fart has pine-0-clean in his wet box and no fungus been like that for years, he used to use distilled water but after 12 months it'd grow a green fungus, with pine-0-clean doesn't grow fungus and good reading from his furno sounder.

Wet box?
Does a wetbox give you better readings ect, as opposed to mounting your transducer strait to your hull?
Just one more cast

yep
Wetbox allows for less airation so a better transducer reading.

Teddy,You should get a far
Teddy,You should get a far better reading than that, Ive put a pic into the brag board taken a while ago. Not real deep but gives you an idea. Just after I took that pic turned the gain down to below 5 and still got bottom and some fish reading.
You might be unlucky and have an air bubble in the hull right below the transducer, pretty rare but can happen.
