Cockburn snapper

Anyone from here get any snapper in the sound this evening? We fished the power station without any luck but could see the chaos going on out towards the middle of the sound, looked like 20+ boats out there huddled in on the same area, figured they were onto some schooling snapper..

Everytime I've seen big

Thu, 2011-09-15 09:28

Everytime I've seen big groups of boats in the sound they usually aren't catching anything. It's usually just over a spot like the gravel patch or D9, a couple of boats will anchor there, and then more and more will come because they see the other boats and assume there's snapper there haha.

Not wanting to question the authority of a man using four exclamation marks :) but are you sure about the maximum size limit for snapper because I couldn’t find any reference to it in the rec fishing guide book?

Bag & Size limit...

Thu, 2011-09-15 15:51

Hmmm... I have just printed page 5...

I'm sure it says you can have 2 per angler - with minimum size of 500mm (South of 31deg S...)

No mention of maximum size on this page...

Please enlighten me!

on the money to me there Juneka. mind you the rules seem so change every few years, was 4 fish only a few years back, and there was a "one fish only over" i think it was 80cm only last year  or the year before.

Understandable that there is some confusion. Really makes it important to refresh yourself with the rules before targeting a species every year on the rules, fisheries dont listen to people who say i didnt know....

Read through this thread again mate

Thu, 2011-09-15 17:31

as Albie says that was last years rules (2010) They changed the rules this year due to some more knowledge of what's necessary.

in the West Coast fishing rules it states -

Pink Snapper.

Minimium size limit (new Reg) 500 mm. this new size limit applies  from just north of Lancelin south to East of Augusta.

Bag limit of 2 per RFBL.

The only High Risk demersal Boat limit is for Dhuies.

The responsibility for knowing the rules is the ANGLERS not Fisheries, keep yourself informed and you wont have any dramas.

Schooling Snapper

Thu, 2011-09-15 14:39

Catching spawning snapper surely isn't the smartest move in the book. All you are doing is encouraging Fisheries to change to the ban period to be over a longer period. Not to mention reducing the breeding stock. I realise that the are being caught within the law but not doing it would be the best option I would have thought. Ifsnapper fishing is banned in Cockburn Sound all year round it we will only have ourselves to blame. Something to consider.....

have to agree with Soup

Thu, 2011-09-15 14:50

and i have been there myself, but really not much of a challenge in catching them at this time of year. We target them all year, and they are there.

30 boats crammed in one area catching spawning fish that would probably take a turd on rope if it was in front of there face?

That aint fishing.

Yeah im with you guys too. Catching the breeding stock fish when they are vunerable isnt a very good idea for our fishery. Each large snapper taken from the sound at this time of year is possibly 100's of less snapper in the years to come.

Not many fisheries in the world allow anglers to target and keep spawning fish, slot limits and closed seasons have come in to keep the meatheads at bay.

and a very small window of oppurtunity to catch them, i think the fisheries have managed this area very well, but then again no different to catching sambos which everyone loves to publicise, and mortality rate is an unknown once released

Recreational Fishing Guide page 5

Thu, 2011-09-15 17:11

Recreational Fishing Guid,e West Coast Region, page 5 printed March 2011.

Pink Snapper

Minimium size limit (new Reg)

500 mm. this new size limit applies  from just north of Lanclin

bag limit 2, no boat limit is stated.

Don't take me wrong I agree that taking the breading stock of these fine fish at this time of year ia akin to shooting yourself in the foot, however it is legal, short sighted yep but that is just my oppinion and each of us to their own.

When you see boats coming into the ramp with 6-8 of these fish people who think of the future must shake their heads in disbelief at the slaughter.

You really think fisheries

Thu, 2011-09-15 17:30

You really think fisheries are going to let 30 boats a night go into the sound with probly 2/3 people on each boat and let every person have 2 massive spawing snapper each be realistic there would be NO snapper left with in a couple years

Thu, 2011-09-15 19:42

I dont agree with people going out day after day catching there 2 fish

but one thing you have to think about is the big blue tinny (professionals) cleaning up every season, going on 2 years ago when i got my 2 snapper for the year they were out every day doing the same thing i can guarante they took twice the amount of fish then all of the other boats combined??

has anyone seen the pro's out there this time?

wrong fishntime

Thu, 2011-09-15 17:48

this has been happening 30+ years mate which i can remember, years back 4 people could bring back 16 fish and before those rules even more and the fish stocks are still strong, you are talking about 10 ton schools (avereage 1000 fish), and there is probably around 15 -20 schools of fish in there now, and they are still a month away from being in full spawning

Collapse of Shark Bay Snapper Bio-mass

Thu, 2011-09-15 17:56

Edmund Burke  1729 - 1797 must have been a great fisherman for he is accredited with the contempory saying (which I'm sure he said to fellow fishermen)

THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW HISTORY ARE DESTINED TO REPEAT IT.

Lets not have a repeat of what happened to the shark bay snapper fishery

It would seem as though Fisheries are actually onto this already with all the research they have done over the years. Hence the ban from October 1 till January 31, when they are spawning.

you lot are unreal!

Thu, 2011-09-15 21:46

the sound is closed for four months to allow the breeding of the snapper and you complaining!! if any of you have fished for snapper for many years you will realise how many fish there are in the bay right now! for years the cray boys fed the snapper up out the front of safety bay and took upto a hundred fish a day for most of the cray season and there are still tonnes of fish there every year! the amount the recreational fisherman take in the small amount compared to what is in the bay! i found three schools of fish today one of them was fifteen metres high and would have been twenty metres wide! and they are not spawing as yet!

Mate if there not spawning

Fri, 2011-09-16 02:18

Mate if they're not spawning what are they doing congregating like that having a tea convention, you're talking like the Snaps are an almost unlimited resource and we as recs can't fish 'em out

As far as the blue boat goes that's able to professionally fish the Snapper even throughout the closed Cockburn snapper season a few years ago they only supply the local market with high quality fish. This was integral to the success of a few high end restuarants in Perth I was told by Jon Ford when I questioned him on it

If you caught one you'd know they're not spawning yet. Gonads tell the story. They're a couple of months off i suspect. Big schools haven't arrived yet. The bans are working if you ask me, I haven't seen so many snapper in years. It's good to see they're coming back in force if you ask me.
