Cocos Islands Fishing advise
Submitted by Matt Latham on Wed, 2011-07-13 14:17
Guys,
I have to go to the Cocos Islands for a work trip in 2 weeks and will definately be packing some fishing gear. Anyone got experience fishing up there at this time of year? Will be fishing land based at this stage so looking at taking PE2 spinning gear with plastics / small popppers etc. Does anyone know if it is worth putting the GT gear in? I have read that the Jetty at night is a possible spot to target them.
Is it possible to get bonefish without using Fly fishing gear?
Any info would be great, will be up there for 4 days. Any been on a charter up there?
Cheers,
Matt

An ex-gfs father I knew used to go fishing of Christmas Island rocks and catch a lot of GT's.... No idea on gear but he wasnt really a super pro fisho.

bonefish
i haven't been to cocos or caught a bonefish , but my mate Joff has been there and tells me you can catch them on ultralight spin gear and small "grub" style plastics and sometimes it's more effective than fly due to wind conditions etc. also the jetty at night he tells me holds some monster gt's so i would pack the big gear for sure!! cheers

bonefish
There is an entry for them in the Steep Point site under the Species section.
They caught them at night bottom bashing, squid bait off the rock. cheers

hey mate
definatley take lots of fishing gear and bone fish are pretty common from the main old jetty just gotta get em in quick as they go hard and the sharks are thick at times!
we only ever got them on ghost crabs thats all the locals seem to use? but we never really tried placcies etc. and big big gt's lurk around the jetty taking poppers at times but they are very smart and will brick u in a instant around the pylons we never managed to land one lost a few monsters as ur sight casting for them if its calm but a few people always get lucky..
best advice is talk to the locals just go to the pub haha as to what times, tides, baits are working for bonefish etc. its not a very big place at all and sum very nice people live there who are more than willing to give out advice,
i spent a bit of time there working on the new wharf construction about 2 years ago so got to know a few of the locals pretty well.
if ya want any more info pm me, no worries
