Colin [ 1 :) ] - The Pole Update
We were suppossed to go fishing today, but changed our minds yesterday afternoon and were looking forward to a bit of a sleep in.
07:30am this morning - all hell broke loose as three cherry picker trucks, 2 tray tops, 3 utes and a crane/augure truck pulled up and commenced replacing the pole out the front of our place (yes we still have those in the country ) .
Here's the guys starting to remove the old pole - quite a bit of infastructure off it:
Top half gone courtesy of a chain saw (lovelly sound ! )
Out comes the bottom half:
In goes the Augur (sp) to drill out the cr*p from the old pole and sink the hole deeper
They've just left - long day for the chaps. Not fishing, not a winge, just doesn't happen every day.

Good pics Colin
Good of the them to start work so early on a Sunday. At least the new pole shouldn't fall on your house.

Thanks Colin :)
Yeah, wasn't it! Ah well, not something you can do over a few days - once you start, you gotta finish, so no point getting grumpy about it. As I said, that pole has a lot of wire off, through and from it. So it took the boys a full day.
Yes, the new pole is pretty sturdy - the old one was pretty rotton at the base apparently. Here's the new pole going in:

OTOH in Perth, on the way down to the North Mole on Sat morning I saw a new green wooden light post had been snapped off at the base after being hit by a car, just east along vincent from the cnr of charles after the car had gone through a crash barrier?
I wonder how fast that car was going?

Fast!
till, unless the base was rotten, or the car was a tank, I'd say way too fast was the answer.

Yeah I've seen trhem snapped
It didnt look rotten, it was a fairly newish-cca treated one too. I've seen them snapped off before, but never after the car has already gone though a crash barrier.
Bets on a big car very fast!

Hi Ya,
Couple of things to take into account. Firstly, CCA makes the timber relatively brittle, and secondly, a lot of the timber poles now days are pine so a soft wood anyway. Add the two together and you have a brittle soft wood. Yes, the car was probably travelling too fast ohtherwise it wouldn't have hit the pole in the first place, but may not have been as fast as you might think. Certainly not as fast as it would need to have been travelling to knock over a jarrah to karri pole.
Cheers.

Update!
Colin, re your question in Andy's 'seal image thread'.
Well, after loosing power last Sunday week, I was visited by WP last Friday and informed that the contactors were going to have to come back because they installed the wrong length pole! Apparently, it was 1.5m too short! (Not compliant with their QA criterior).
Also, in order to remove than standard stay into our yard (installed prior to our block existing), they needed some of our water to keep a diamon drill cool whilst drilling into bedrock just outside our dfence to install an 'outrigger stay' (something I had 'convinced' WP to do).
Additionally, they are also upgrading the HT infastructure.
So the contractors were back on Monday AND Yesterday - with no power from approx 08:00 to 15:00 - 17:00 each day.
Have to ask the question - just how hard is it to get the pole right? That's a considerable duplication of expenditure and resources.

Hi mate
Sounds like perfectly good utility company efficiency to me Colin.
I can bet it is getting frustrating.
Reminds me a little of when I was a teenager. I used to work night shifts and one rainy day I decided to walk down to my local beach in Sydney to see if the surf was any good. I noticed this power company truck sitting in the parking lot with about four or five guys in it.
Many hours passed and nothing happened. Then all of a sudden there was a burst of activity and a guy climbed out and attached a length of wire to a power pole. I thought, finally they are getting to work. You know what it was. It was a cord to their electric kettle. Sadly, that was the only burst of activity for the day.
Hope they sort out your situation soon, Colin Hay

Thanks Colin!
LMAO Colin on the kettle bit. The field manager for WP was (is) VERY good. He actually went to LOT of trouble to explain and apologise - he's a real 'people person', so the right guy for the job.
As I said, they did come to the party with the outrigger stay.
I'm sure the issues will dissapear in the 'dicommuication bubble' that it the disfunctional escalting reporting mechanism of sycophantic middle management.

That's good
Great to hear that they are being helpful. Hopefully it will all be sorted out soon. Nothing worse than losing power.

Happily
Though I wouldn't want to burden you with my problems. You have enough with the pole sitters.
And as for Matt, well, what can I say,

Electricity...
Matt - best way to describe it - go to your local supermarket and purchase a packet of currents. When you get home - empty them and put them in a very long line. Now; go outside and find two red-backs - carefully place one at each end of the line of currents - put your finger on one end and note the un desirable consequences. Now you have an idea of what electrcity is.
PS - With what you spend, I'd thought you'd have your own generator or sub station

He can always find them in the bargain barrel at Big W
They still have a warning sign up after he cleaned out the fishing tackle bargains.
