Combo for Montebellos

Hello All,

I am a new poster but a long time reader of these forums. It has come to the time where I need advice from the Fishwrecked fountain of knowledge!

For a start I do not consider myself an experienced fisherman. While growing up beach fishing on the east coast I have not really got into it until the last few years while living in Perth. I am mainly land based fishing north of the river chasing tailor, herring etc off the beach. I have been on one trip to the Abrolhos and another to the Top End which got me interested.

Anyway, I am off on a trip to the Montebello's later in the year. I have a budget of $500 - $600 to spend on a combo for the trip. I already have a lightish spin combo which I plan on taking along.

What do you recommend?

Regards,

DW

ive not been to the monties yet but from what i hear the fish are big and tough ... what sort of fish are you chasing ? if its billfish then a very good penn international could be had for that price. if your casting poppers and lures then id suggest a large spinning reel like a spheros 14000 or bigger with a rod similar to the shimano bluewater 15-24kg. .

a little more info would be very helpful as there is sooo much gear out there

For what fishing?

Tue, 2010-03-02 21:53

At a guess I'd say bottom fishing?

Maybe a t-curve deepjig 400 o/h (~$300) and a Daiwa Saltist 30T or even the Fin Nor offshore 30 (~$280)?

If you dont mind buying 2nd hand, I think there was a jigwrex PE6 o/h in the buy-sell section for like $150? Would leave you some money spool the reel and get a few jigs?

I'd also suggest a saltist & keep an eye out for a second hand jig/bottom bashing rod.

Boys above all listed some

Boys above all listed some good options - If it's only bottom bashing (and maybe some trolling with heavy braid) Huggy's suggestion is good value. A mate of mine uses the same combo north to bottom bash, jig and troll (although a little heavy for most species trolling).

if you only have $600 and want to cast for some of the trevally, mack's, trout etc I'd consider a spin combo including a reel such as a Saltist, Spheros or Saragosa and match it to something around 7 foot... You can cast, bottom bash etc with it (although not ideal).

I have been to the montes & again depending on what you are chasing depends on the outfit. I would have to agree with the above comments. I used a t curve jig 400 with a saltist reel for most things. Jigging, bait, trolling. Caught everything from trevallys to sailfish on it. Highly recommend this outfit. If you want some fun in the shallows using plastics i dont go past diawa gear. There are so many fish & not enough time up there! Have fun.

Montes rod and reel

Wed, 2010-03-03 11:30

Same as above . Been there a few times and found that a relatively not too exxy combo being a T/Curve deep jig/spin 200 and a saragosa 18000 with whiplash 80 pound braid will basically do everything.

CAUTIONARY NOTE HOWEVER THERE ARE NO TACKLE SHOPS OUT THERE SO A SPARE ROD AND REEL AND OTHER GEAR IS A MUST

Thanks for all of the replys. Has got me thinking. I may try and source second hand gear so I can stretch the budget a bit further. I'll keep my eye on the Buy-Sell section to see if anything suitable comes up.

I am going on a charter so they will have some gear on board.

Cheers,
