Complete Novice Fisherpeople - Perth!
Submitted by Rebecca Frank on Mon, 2013-01-14 15:50
Hi all
I was just wondering what advice you can give 2 complete novice fishpeople! I've been on a couple of deep sea fishing trips and absolutely loved it and want to start doing much more fishing on weekends.
We have a little boat, 2 x rods and some lures etc. We were told that using squid out by Garden Island is pretty good.
Can anyone give me some more advice on what to use, where to go etc etc?
Cheers

Welcome
Hi Rebecca, and welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find plenty of advice from some experienced anglers. Agree with Osprey, can you tell us what area you live in or will be launching from, and some info on the boat? Plenty of options inshore, around the islands, five fathom bank and beyond, the river is also worth considering?
The more info you can provide the better quality the advice will be. Another good way of seeing what others have had success with is looking at the reports and brag board posts, often people will happily share details of what they have caught, where, and with what rigs/bait etc.
Good luck.

Well Becs
First things first, Being a newbie to site welcome on board. If your planning on fishing around Garden island try near the Coat hanger along the causeway on the turn of the tide, or drift along the weed banks on the inside of garden island till you find some sandy patches anchor up. Rigs simple one first sinker on the bottom of your line than upto 3 hooks above, second running sinker with hook on the end of your line. You can always try a set of gangs under a float. Use some burly but not to much or you'll over feed the fish you what to catch. Buy a book on knot tying and try a few before heading out. Always have some squid jigs with you even if you hang one over the side as your drifting. Good luck and take care on the water. Finally check the regulations from fisheries so you don't come adrift of the inspectors.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

Great, thanks guys. That definitely helps.
We've got a RIB (guessing about 6-8m). We keep it down in Freo .... It's pretty good in most conditions (wouldn't take it out too far on a rough day but is fine if you go slowly).
We went out yesterday to between Carnac Island and then behind Carnac. Bought a couple of pre made rigs (guy in the shop advised us on them). Used squid as bait, got a lot of bites but think they were from really small fish as the bait kept on getting taken with no big bites. We caught one tiny little fish. Squid kept on getting taken however many times we hooked it onto the hook! Any advice there?!

They'd be butter fish I'd say
They'd be butter fish I'd say with stripes on them ...they do alot of pecking with the occasional one hooking up...time to move on when they start swarming...if you brought your squid previously you should grab yourself a couple of squid jigs and drift over the weed patches between carnac and woodmans point always pick a few squid / cuttlefish up there for either bait or dinner thats always a good start...goodluck
