Sometimes ya feel like you just want to tow the boat up there and help up - I hope emergency services et al have plenty of help in the search.

Im pretty sure everyone will be pitching in. From what I have read in the media, Police have their boat in the area and ar coordinating land, sea, and air searches. Strong southerly winds and a 3m swell would not be making it easy though.

The Dornier that went up this morning has come back to Perth already. Would have thought that would have stayed for the duration.

Where to search
The hardest part of the search is knowing where to look. Unfortunately they did not log on with sea rescue or tell anyone where they were going.
A lot of ocean up there.

I can't for the life of me understand why in this day and age people still refuse to log in with sea rescue groups, or at the very least advise a person onshore about their intended destination.

Yep- agree. I really feel for there Families.
Its the main reason why I login, and you only have to give a "Fishing Area" when you Log in. ie for me its usually if you are moving around I give " Southwest corner Garden Island in close" or oppox distance
Maybe not the best, but at least it tells Sea Rescue you are out there.

Log ins
Would like to see it compulsory to log in, even now on duty logging in boats for Carnarfin fishing competition we see boats heading out without logging in when its one of the requirements of the comp conditions.
Its not as though we want to learn their spots as most of us have fished the area for years and probably know more than they could even dream about.
Starting yesterday we have asked some boats that we don't recognise their call sign for their phone numbers so we have some record of if we need to contact them if they fail to log off allieviating the need to call water police to do a follow up

comp reg's
Some of our comps rules at home (gero) are that you must log on for the days fishing. If you dont, no one on that vessel gets the points for that days catch... Its a good way to ensure crew remember to log on and have good comms equipment. :)

Mandatory to log in, and also mandatory to call in during the day for the published radio scheds. No call in = disqualified for the day.

A mate of mine is up there atm; he said all fishing has been called off today and anyone who can help is involved in coordinated search. They heard some chatter about debris being found near the South Passage but there's been no confirmation either way. He reckons yesterday was pretty feral.

Here's hoping they turn up ok
Does anyone know weather it's an ali or glass boat, if the seas are as reported are 3 metres that's a pretty ruff sea to be searching in.
I hope the boat is still afloat and they turn up none the worse for the experience and have a good tail to tell the kids.

Mate is on location at the South Passage, the chopper and one of the rescue Naiads are sussing something out on the bottom inside the South. There is no confirmation either way though; hopefully a false alarm but as others have posted there's been gear found which has been recognised to be from their tub so who knows. Focus point is between Five Fingers and the Passage.
Update: false alarm, nothing found. Choppers and fixed wing aircraft are still looking but boats have been called back in to make a plan for tomorrow.

Hoping for a good result
Channel 7 news just reported that they had advised their camp of an 8.30pm return. Navigating through the reef at night with 4m swells doesn't sound too good. Fingers crossed.

south west passage can be tricky on the best of days let alone on a day with 4 meter swells and worse coming home at 830 at night with a 4 meter following swell hope they make it

Big swell.
Swell picked up during the day on sunday. Exmouth bombie ended up about 10ft with the odd bigger one around 2 or 3 in the arvo. It was really big by exy standards with big close out sets coming through dunes. A surfer tragically died at gnarloo on sunday

as the boys have said...
red bluff is about 35km from gnaraloo, and they actually do have 2 x Telstra phone booths at 3 mile camp, and another 2 at the homestead, both of which also have reverse charge options, as well as free 000 calls...
I have seen toombies a solid 12 -15ft, and yeah, its only for the hard-cores!! quite a few guys drove from down south, specifically for that swell too.

week before
The weekend before had pros in camp getting stuck into it.
There was a head injury on the monday where reef was removed from a guys head then on the sunday just gone the fatality.
I think watching guys paddle into midgies at tow size - 8ft + , is probably the most ballsy waves Iv seen ridden there. An area where you really need to know your limits and dont go to impress.
Me , i know my limits and dont surf in general any where near the amount i used to so Im happy to crack a few a sit it out. Camp has a lot of crew chasing waves and thats where it gets dangerous as people completely out of there league get in trouble.
Winter is early this year and this May was more like August with a new swell nearly every 3 days.
Right now its settled back to a southerly flow/drift but its been hard work getting fish.

Search area
Interesting that they only searched "500sq km"?
While it sounds alot, it's little more than 20 x 20km and isn't much further than say Boorabooja to South Passage and 10 miles out.
Im guessing that means they have some idea of what's happened.
Very sad for the families and locals involved.
Really hope there is at least some closure...

I just hope the guys had time to get their pfds on and have drifted safely to shore somewhere. Do we know what direction the wind has been for most of the last couple of days up there?
This story is one that I can't seem to get out of my mind.

That's bad news
According to the "West" there were 2 EPIRBs on board so it reads like they where well aware of the risks of going to sea. I think what ever happened must have happened without any warning as these two men were not novices the news tonight may shed more light on what happened.

Certainly makes you think about how fast a broach could happen, or how a rock could appear just ahead of you in a trough before the next roller comes and game over.
Seriously hoping this is one of those 'it can happen' stories.

WA Police DIVERS on a
WA Police
DIVERS on a charter vessel discovered a human arm on the ocean floor near Coral Bay on Tuesday as the search for two missing fishermen in the area continues.
But police are not willing to confirm whether the arm belongs to either of the two fishermen from Port Kennedy who went missing off the coast of Coral Bay in rough seas on Sunday.
Andrew Hinds, 57, and Nigel Kitchen, 50, failed to return to shore on Sunday night after a day out on the water on their annual fishing trip, 1100km north of Perth.
A police spokesman confirmed late on Tuesday afternoon that “earlier today divers of a charter vessel notified police that they located a human arm on the sea floor near Bill’s Bay”.
“Police attended and divers retrieved the arm. It will undergo forensic examination and may take several days for results.”
The arm was found about 10am on Tuesday by a group of tourists on a manta ray dive tour off Coral Bay.

If the boat did wreck, as it
If the boat did wreck, as it is fairly confidently assumed, on or around the reef, it will only be a matter of time (perhaps a long time, though), that the wreckage of the boat is found by someone diving. Still just a sickening situation.

South passage Exmouth
If memory serves me right there is a very strong surge of water coming in through that channel on a rising spring tide, in calm conditions it may well be worth a flight along the reef line and looking inside the reef.

With the big swells they
With the big swells they have been experiencing up there, the surf zone around the reef will be a mass of white turbid water. Imposible to see through from the air and suicidal to get a boat in close or put divers in.
It will be found, given time and the right conditions.

coral bay update
Unfortunately no further parts of the boat or remains have been found
Family are still waiting on dna results in relation to the limb which was found
Two very missed guys, one being Nigel the weigh master at Mangles Bay Fishing Club for the past 4 plus years, and Andy a past weigh master at the Rockingham Offshore fishing club and life member of Mangles Bay Fishing Club
Must say a big thankyou to the Coral Bay Sea Rescue, Water Police (Delphinus), Exmouth Police, Police divers, Coral bay local residents and all the rec fishers up on holidays who took a day off fishing to help search. The amount of resources that were provided was a credit to all involved.
When one is so close to a tragedy like this, it certainly opens your eyes up to how complacent we can be, while undertaking a past time so many of us love.
Its great to see, talk about the life cell etc, and how we can give ourselves that extra fighting chance if ever faced with the unexpected. I know personally my boat is already being fitted with the little safety extras that may one day just save my life and my crew.
Be safe guys
RIP Andy & Nigel

Nothing to do with the arm
Nothing to do with the arm but when we were searching for the missing blokes we were just inside the south passage and we watched a boat go out through the passage to go fishing. It was some older chaps in an old chivers 17 or 18 foot with a merc on a pod and when they went out they were about 40m right of the middle and there was a fair swell running and they went through 2 or 3 waves that were breaking. had We shat ourselves as we thought they were going ass up but they made it through.
Bernie from mahi mahi was saying that when he came in the south the same day this same boat followed him in and next thing his passengers are freaking out as this boat had a wave close out on it and they got lucky again.
