Coral Bay Trawling - under Commonwealth license 53 tonne

Was chatting to the crew off of Olympia up her in Coral Bay after they had been wet lining for Goldband. Mentioned that they managed to get a tonne of Goldband , which was 1/ 10th of there quota. They mentioned there was a trawler up her 6 weeks ago that caught 53 tonne. I asked how could this be he he said that they were operating under a commonwealth license.
I didn't realise there was a difference. Didn't really seem fair to me.

If true what the hell is our glorious State Minister for Fisheries doing. Like the shark problem nothing I presume.
Really cannot see any fish stock surviving that level of assault.

I understand that people need
I understand that people need to eat and that we need industry for jobs, however, makes it difficult for us amateurs with the demersal limits we have and more and more areas being locked away or proposed to be locked away.
Very hard to compete with a trawler dragging out 53 tonne.

Yeah - trying to find some sort of catch data for this area from trawlers. In my opinion it would be hard to decimate a fish stock to to point of near no return wet lining, as like here in Coral bay when there were 4 wet liners after Goldband working Coral Bay 6-7 yrs ago. so one of two things have happened, the fish stocks have declined to the point that it is no longer viable for 4 boats to fish the area or the fishers introduced a Quota.

The Olympia and the other boats that were based in Coral Bay made a lot of money catching Goldband back in the early 2000s.
Loads of more than 1500kgs for a couple of days was commonplace but eventually the big numbers dropped off and then the quotas were bought in.
As for the trawlers, I was under the impression they were only allowed to fish over 200mts but am happy to be proven wrong

As are the Tuna and Swordfish permits we owned.
200 meters is a long way out from Coral Bay and I doubt there is a lot of interaction except for the fact the 200 meters baseline doesn't exactly follow the contour, it is a series of lines which cut the corners both ways to allow simpler policing.

And yep, 200 mts is a long way out from Coral Bay

Im pretty sure its closed to it as the Commonwealth Marine park extends about 20 miles out but not that big an area would be outside 200M

If they are trawling i'd be more concerned about the damage done to the bottom than the 53 T of fish that should come back eventually.....
Its really frustrating this still occurs today IMO, when you see/read the trips blokes like fishwreck members do up there on their once a year dream holidays trying to catch a good feed and the money they spend and what it actually means to people as opposed to this raping.....

Boys i have to tell you 200m line isn't that far from coral bay
we fish out of a 19ft ally and get those distances comfortably
the amount of rubies and cod being caught out the 300+ areas in coral bay now days goes to show it's not that far
This trawler is decimating what we love doing
what's the bet it's put back into the rec fishos pillaging it or better yet the commercial operators raping the place. Most of those poor blokes can't take a shit out at sea without fisheries knowing but old commonwealth licensed trawler can go to town

How many tonne would the sharks take in a good week at C/bay
Based on recent reports what do you reckon is the weekly tonnage taken by sharks in a good week at Coral Bay/ Ningaloo in the 40 to 120 m depth. I was just throwing some numbers into a calculator and if a boat has 5 good fish taken a session it adds up quick.

If that upsets you then you maybe should be taking a look a little further north to see that a fleet of trawlers work from Rankin Bank to north of Port Hedland between the 50 meter and 200 meter contours.
On State licences.
Catching up to 50 dolphins a year it was reported without even having TED's on the nets.
It may have been tightened up in the last few years but that was it until quite recently

Out of sight out of mind eh Rob. It's amazing someone catches a big cod and the planet goes crazy (FB planet). But what you just mentioned above doesn't even register. Must be too hot up north for the ferals to kick up.

When I was longlining
When I was longlining (Commonwealth permit) 15 years ago, I got to know one of the guys who fishes a commonwealth trawl permit.
)
We were both tied up on the Freo mulie jetty and his decky got full of piss and left a pizza in the oven starting a galley fire (thats another story
He was fishing out of Fremantle at the time catching deep water flathead, and shitloads of it (yes saw their unloads with my own eyes) and they had to send it to Victoria because noone wanted it here.
Other times (we would talk on the HF regularly) he would be down off the lower west coast.
Do I like trawling? No, and I dont know alot about it as I have never done it, fish prawns or scallops.
They have the entire west coast slope area to move around.
Does it impact the boats out of Coral Bay-almost certainly at times.
They are not confined to a small area and rape it bare.
I dont know how they work it now, but I can assure you it is not as simple as "these are the goodies, and these are the baddies".
Certainly though up until only a few years back, this area (outside the 200 meter line) was a region unseen by rec fisherman.
So people must also understand that this is a fishery that has operated for generations out of contact with recs but only recently is coming on the radar of people.
But some people get the impression that it is actually those licences that have changed...
