It is a rankin. On our last drop I got that one and my wife got a double header of smaller ones as soon as we hit the bottom.

Great work mate I'll be up there from the 1st of July for a couple of weeks. Looks like the sharks left you alone too you got some good ones past them.

Now that makes me jealous. Some very nice fish there. Them big rankin don t like leaving the bottom. Got a couple of big ones last year. That red is a donkey too , I'm guessing around the 10 kg Mark. Well done .

Hi The main thing about diving there is it is mostly inside the reef unless the swell is right down and most of the places are shallow enough to snorkel. Of the places the local dive boats go to all are quite shallow except a site called Lotties. I have snorkelled most of the places they go and personally see no need for scuba gear. I have done a few dives outside the reef and they are OK. one spot called the elbow has a fair bit of bigger stuff. I have marks for a few spots outside if you want. I have spent a fair bit of time with spearos cllose to the back of the reef and there is some nice stuff there but is very swell dependant. If you do take the gear it is quite lively inside the reef SW of Lotties but there can be quite a bit of current there. I reckon one of the best snorkel sites is a place the tour operators call the maze where you can see anything especially later in the afternoon. Another good area is the north end of the porites up past the lagoon just north of the sancuary.
Not trying to say do not take the gear, just saying you can see a lot without it.
