I have scuba dived with ease, in t-shirt and shorts (a fortnight ago off rockingham) with two weights. Sunk like a brick.

Depends what suit you have,
Depends what suit you have, everyone is different but i like to be neutral around 5m. I dive mostly with a 3mm suit and wear a chest weight that I havent weighed but it would be simmilar to 3ish belt weights.

Its a balance act
You dont want to sink like a brick, and you dont want to battle to get down.
I agree with the neutral idea at 5m roughly. When new it will take a little time to work out. If you are a standard size with a 3ml wetty start with 3 wts, 5ml 4 and work from there.
Get to 5m odd and see if you can just float around that depth without effort. Deaper down you will find you should sink a little faster, higher up float a little easier. But just a guide as everyone has to work it out for themselves.

im in the same boat just
im in the same boat just starting out spearfishing, i got a 3-5mm wtty and weigh around 85-90kg, im 6ft + and i use 3 3lb weights, maybe a tiny tiny bit too heavy, but with no air i just sink so my nose is out of water, will float up from 10m+ slowly though, sit still on bottom at 3m, i got mine ofr $11 each i think, or was it $9?
Fishing and catching are two different things. But i want to learn how to catch.
