A couple of metro tailor
With the forecast suggesting that conditions would be close to ideal for a tailor session yesterday, Sherbs and I ventured to one of our favourite north metro spots hoping to pick up a few nice "greenbacks".
Arriving at our chosen location we found that we were the only anglers around and we were able to get to our preferred location on the rocks. With the swell up, we got pretty wet from waves spraying over the top of us, but the green and white water had us both psyched up for a big session.
However, it appeared we hadprobably arrived a little early as the first few hours were dominated by whiting and herring bites.
But then, with the sun finally getting close to horizon, the pickers shut down and we knew that the tailor had arrived.
Sure enough, within minutes I got my first tailor hit, only to drop what felt like a very good fish.
The next cast I had another good hit and managed to get a 45 cm plus tailor onto the rocks - only for it to bite me off and fall down between the rocks and disappear.
Sherbs was soon on and landed a nice 45 cm tailor, before losing another fish.
The tailor went off the bite for awhile and Sherbs and I were starting to get a little worried when the whiting started harassing our baits again.
But thankfully, it was only a short lull and the tell tale tailor hits started again.
I soon landed a really well conditioned fish of around 40cm and then a much more solid fish of 47 cm, while Sherbs unforunately, droped another fish.
Strangely, the fish went off the bite as soon as the sun sunk below the horizon, but it was of no matter as the short session was a lot of fun.
(P.S. Sorry about not having any pics, but I have banned myself from taking a camera with me at present as I think they are jinxing me).
All the best, Colin Hay

Nice work!! I haven't caught a size tailor south of the river for at least a year now :( guess I'll just stick to catching salmon for the time being!

All the big tailor do seem to be in the north metro areas
at the moment Beau. But I am sure they will start turning up around the reefy areas in the south once we get further into winter mate.

Good Read
Nice work Colin. With a couple of dropped fish I'm thinking it doesn't make any difference whether the camera is there or not. Sounds like a top session though.

Actually, a photo of me staring longingly down through the rocks
hoping my tailor would somehow come back might have made a good "bloopers" pic soupster.

Yes
Yes know the feeling well. Was fishing out back above the pod on a mates boat. Pulled up a huge saddle tail. It came off the hook, bounced on the floor, then in the drink. They all looked at me waiting for me to go off, so i just cut some more squid and sent it down!

Shame no pics!!
The damn camera used to be #1 blame for our lack of fish, but I take it out all the time now, funny enough the only time we use it is when we get back in and start filleting fish, go figure?? Probably doesn't need to do the 100 odd km's on the ocean!! Sounds like you had fun all the same, take the camera next time, I can assure you it's not preventing you catching fish!! LOL

Hi Buschy
I think the best tip at the moment is make sure you can get out for a fish whenever the next south wester is blowing. I have been to some of our best spots lately when the easterlies have been in and the fishing results have been really poor.
Also, make sure you have one of those baitcatch rigs handy, and if the whiting are chewing your baits catch a few and throw them out. The tailor love them.

You need bigger hooks
As Ranger say.. see you out there!
I was up at the "office" last week and caught some nice fish including a sizable shark that undid all the good work the surgeons did on my back the week before. Keep in touch guys.

sounds like you guys had some fun. that feeling of a decent fish falling down between the rocks is hard to describe , but 1 word that sort of fits. Sinking. at least you got a couple of fish to take home.

Lol, I blame myself entirely Russ and Sandy
I had too much line out between the rod tip and the fish when I tried to lift the fish in on a swell - and then couldn't properly control it when it started thrashing around.

Some really good info in
Some really good info in that post Colin about the way the bite can work. Thanks for posting.
We had two cameras in the boat today and are blaming our lack of fish on that too.

Lol The camera ban has worked pretty well lately
Just a heads up for anyone heading out for some tailor at the moment. There are some real big "greenbacks" around at present - I saw an absolute cracker landed from the beach yesterday morning.
