sharks were release exept the hammerhead which produced some nice fillets and was caught out behind garden island. the tiger put up a nice fight and swam off strong with out its stomach hanging from its mouth and minimal blood loss which was good to see i dont see any problems with catching these sharks if they are treated with respect

" I dont see any problems with catching these sharks if they are treated with respect"
A few tips: Never lift a shark up by its tail, never expose it to the sun for starters.
From : Good practices to reduce the mortality of sharks and rays caught incidentally by tropical tuna purse seiners..by Poisson F, Vernet A.L, Seret B, Dagorn L.
Internal organs: Sharks and rays are very fragile because their internal organs are not protected by a rigid skeleton, but loosely held in place by connective tissue. More than any other fish, they suffer damage to internal organs when removed from the water. In their environment, water supports their organs; out of the water, the connective tissue can easily tear and their organs are easily crushed because of the weight of gravity.
Spinal cord: Injury to the spinal cord and internal organs is particularly likely to occur if the animals are lifted by their head or tail. Pressures on the spine can inflict irreversible damage. The weight of gravity can also damage tendons that hold vertebrae in place.
Gills and blood circulation: In the water, sharks and rays can suffocate if they are restrained; their blood circulation can be reduced when they are not moving. The gills and other internal organs are very easily damaged once they are removed from the water. They enable them to breathe and any damage to the gill slits may result in a slow death by suffocation when released.
Snout: Several sensory organs are situated in the snout of the shark: the nostrils (olfaction), the Lorenzini ampullae (electroreceptors), the anterior branches of the lateral line system (detection of movements and vibrations in the surrounding waters) and sensory crypts (chemoreceptors). This means that shark snouts are very sensitive and fragile. It is strongly advised not to hurt it, because damage caused to these sensory organs can seriously handicap shark by reducing its ability to detect and capture its prey.
Particular life history traits: It is well known that sharks and rays have life history traits that make them vulnerable to fishing, and very slow to recover once depleted. The silky shark*is now the most common species of sharks in the bycatch of the purse seiner, followed far behind by the formerly abundant oceanic whitetip, the hammerhead and mako sharks. The catch trends suggest that all of these species have been declining in abundance in recent years. This is why many of the RFMOs and biodiversity conventions have begun to adopt special conservation and management measures for several oceanic shark species.

Lighten up a little eh?
Good to have the youngsters in our community fishing instead of being trouble.
I'm sure your points a correct a valid, but there must be a better way to pass on such valuable information.
Good fishing, I like the reports the lads put in. Keeps me motivated. Well done again fellas.

Fathoms info
IMO Fathom has done the righty by putting it up, that way it brings it to peoples attention when the pics are showing that isn't happening.

No need to tear him down.
No need to tear him down. Good to see that the young guys are starting to try and do it better and harm them a lot less, yes there is still plenty to fix up and for them to improve but they are getting somewhere over what has been going on with most dying in the past.
always looking for a new challenge!!

I didn't tear him down
Just posted some info that will hopefully protect OUR sharks from catch and release situations...I'll add.. catching and releasing sharks for fun is a really F*&^%d idea and does nothing for us Anglers other then give some environmental activist some weaponry to use in the furure to lock us out.

What makes catching and
What makes catching and releasing sharks any differnt to any large gamefish??? Greenys might have a winge about marlin or sails or maybe gts. Fail to see how because it's a shark it's any different to any other catch and release fishing. Might just have to start killing everything I catch or take up a new hobby like vandalism seeing and we aren't allowed to do anything these days without someone getting upset
always looking for a new challenge!!

You can't be serious mate.
You can't be serious mate. "Catching and releasing sharks for fun is a really fucked idea" That is one of the dumbest statements I have heard on here this year.
These guys are having fun and learning the art of angling thats what fishing is all about. Not everyone has a boat or the money to go on a charter. When did we become so presious about sharks. So what if a few die because of being caught, its not the end of the world. We should be incouraging these guys on catching and releasing any fish and teaching them better ways of doing it.
Keep the photos coming boys and don't listen to the negative comments. There is a lot of people on here that never post any pics of fish but love to negatively comment on others that do.

great markings
that tiger has some great markings on it,good on you fathom for putting up that information i think everyone on this site agrees with catch and release when you are not going to eat your catch and having the reletive info on how to go about it corredctly when hndling the sharks is very relevent to ensure the fish fights another day

Well done mate ...If I ever get a small hammerhead I'll have to give it the taste test...that tiger looks in better nick than D.Greens one lol...the only thing I could suggest would be to maybe lead it down to the shoreline and grab some pics in the wave break...thats if you want to C&R ..if thats the ammo jetty you blokes outta get some gamechairs mounted there...cheers for the pics

Ha ha have to disagree with
Ha ha have to disagree with you on that one Jeff. But it might just be me I've tried both and reckon the Hammerhead is heaps nicer. But it could also be the way it's processed. Fathom has a point handle them with care guys but they are probably the easiest fish to release.

Good few catches Taco
Dropped past a couple of times to see what you youngsters are upto. You've spent a fair few hours out there over the holidays, now off to TAFE and leave the sharks alone HaHA.
Nothing wrong with some information on how to handle sharks and rays, specially if you are releasing them. Target catch and release is done on many species not just for pleasure but also for research.
It's a shame that the jetty hasn't been fixed up to how it was before.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

Great pics mate
Nice captures there buddy.
I caught a solid 4-5 foot bronzie surf fishing recently in very hot conditions. The shark got tangled in amongst 2 lines and by the time we sorted every thing out and took a couple of pics he had been out of the water for nearly 10mins. I thought he was going to be pretty crook but as soon as he hit the water he exploded and swam off flat out not "groggy" at all. In my experience sharks seem much more resiliant than other fishes when been released. Because they are so tough and energetic getting them to hold still for a happy snap is the tricky part.
