I had a box sent QLD to WA recently that would of been 700x500x500 and weighed about 7-8kg via Auspost and that was $70.

Yeah, the surfboard cover is the main culprit as they cube it out with a weight equivalent.
eg from Aust Post .....
"Charges for parcels weighing more than 1kg that are square or rectangular in shape are assessed according to their actual weight or cubic weight equivalent, whichever is greater. The cubic weight is the parcel's volume in cubic metres multiplied by 250."

You or the sender must have access to an account Bluedog.
Hard to find a courier other than pack&send that operates with out one
Australia Post also have very strict size restrictions

Do you mind if I ask who you used? had a similar problem with a dodgy rod I bought off ebay. Pack and Send $55 not including packaging. Smartsend $18 no account required. Bloody rod snapped first cast!

The sting is if you are in a hurry, Smartsend sounds not too bad at $18 for 5-6 working days ;)
