GoPro advice
Submitted by Paul H on Fri, 2012-12-14 12:01
Decided to get a GoPro camera (secret santa from me!!) for the boat and have a couple of questions.
Is the GP3 silver better then the white (white doesn't metnion image stabilisation whereas silver does).
only looking at mounting it the the rocket launcher etc for a cockpit view. Any one else have the white or earlier models and if using in a similar situation is the Image Stab, really needed for that type of mounted use.
Any mounts that can be swivelled/tilted??
Would a fish eye lens be better for a wider angle or would a normal lens suffice??
Cheers Paul

Suction mount
Get the suction mount, you can get more angles with it and is very stable. Its probaly the mount i use the most but also have the small mount for a standard camera stand .

You only have one choice of
You only have one choice of lens, and thats fisheye, I havent read anything about different lenses, you might be referring to the housings, I which I'd recommend the flat lens dive housings. Pretty much with the gopro 3's you've got black which is the top model, then the silver, then the white which is the basic model.

Check this link out
Check this link out http://gopro.com/hd-hero3-cameras
You can easily compare the 3. Note the massive difference from the white with black, 5 mega pixel photos compared to 12mp with the black, 5 frames per second burst compared to 30, and the huge difference in video quality options. Obviously you'd reccomend the black for anyone in the market.
Gopro released the hero1 years ago, recently put all the features in a smaller camera and called it gopro hero 3 white edition, the hero 2 is now the silver edition. Smart move by gopro catching alot of people out who didnt do their research!

I have the Hero3 Silver
The Hero3 silver edition is different to the Hero 2 in the fact that it has built in wifi . There is a gopro app to be able to run it from your phone . Gopro comes with attaching mounts but not a suction mount . Easy as to make a rail mount or buy one of the gopro mounts as an add on . Santa got mine as well but I couldnt wait to use it . Wish i'd got one years ago the video quality is great . Battery life is only about 2.5 hours so it may pay to get a couple of extra batteries for prolonged use as it takes a while to charge . Have used mine on the boat without any dramas with image stability . The std lens gives you different views depending on what settings you use. The silver edition gets my vote .

mainly just want to mount it
mainly just want to mount it to the rocket launcher and then just switch it on/off as required mainly want to check it will be wide enough lens given its a small boat - figure I'll probably go the silver anyway. Boke in shop told me batt life is 7 hours (unless you use it alot he said then 3) I had my doubts and will grab an extra batt anyway. Figure I'll need the roll bar mount due to Diametre of rocket launcher.
What about brackets for mounting to underside of cabin hardtop (a mates boat) will want Gpro to hang from mount but be right way up??
Paul N which mounting arms does it come with - stick on or suction cap wont do going over waves I'd imagine

Upside
You can change the go pro to record in an upside down position Paul.
Have you got an i-phone? The app is brilliant, allows you to fully control the go pro, delete files (recordings) etc.

No don't have an i-phone (stone age I know but I have a work supplied phone and pay zilch).
Happy to have a few spare SD cards and just change them over during the day and download to laptop that night.

I've just placed an order
I've just placed an order for a GoPro3...
Was just looking at the speargun mounting options and came across the "roll bar mount" (link at the bottom of this page http://www.madmackie.com.au/products/cameras/underwater/gopro/ )
This maybe another option for mounting it to the rocket launcher?
