Coxswains unrestricted.
Hi guys,
I am looking into undertaking my Coxswains unrestricted cetificate to get myself on the commercial end of the ladder, to hopefully give me the oppurtunities to go and work up north way and have a travel about while im still young and have no real responsibilitys.
If any of you have taken the Unrestricted coxswains course or cert 5 etc would you say it was a wise thing to, so i can explore a little bit further into maybe a short commercial career. Also i will be pushing for my Cert 5 when the time become right in the future.
Basically the reason why i ask this is i previously qualified as a pharmacutical dispenser (UK) and have decided that for the next 5 years i want to do something very different, i love being on the water and have previously worked on boats for the past year and cant get enough but working the deck isnt the same as being in charge of the vessel.
cheers

STCW
As well as your Coxswains you will need your STCW95 (certificate of safety training) and Dogging and Rigging otherwise you won't get a look in on any mining/gas/oil boats as a deckie. Those courses cost around $3800 all up and normal coxswains is $750 ish I think (well at Exxy tafe it was) I have done the stcw95 and dogging, just need to do my orals for coxswains and the rigging and then I'm out there as well, gotta be in it to win it!

If its for work/travel
In Australia, not a set mining/o+g position as Adam was talking about, there are some jobs in tourism, in season as a deckhand that only require coxswains.
C-Quest put an ad on seek on the 19th april for a tender driver/deckhand and they said either RST or Coxswains to start in Broome tomorrow.

As Adam suggested there are plenty of other tickets that would help, Senior First Aid or Remote Area First Aid, STCW95, Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency, Divemaster or higher, Responsible service of Alcohol... etc
Not quite sure which Cert 5 you are referring too? Maybe Master class 5?

Reading your post again about wanting to drive the vessels then I guess a Master 5 would be a starting point, but if you are going that far then get the STCW95. No point mucking about when you are at that level.

hi mate, what type
hi mate, what type of industry are you thinking?, i'm currently in the process of getting my restricted coxwain (boss at work doesn't want to pay for unrestricted and restricted is all we need for the work we need to do), this allows us to operate a vessel up to 8m and up to 5 NM offshore, this is restricted to commercial work not taking paying customers, want to get nu unrestricted on day tho

unfortunately there's no
unfortunately there's no "short" career if you want to drive boats. Once you get your seatime for your coxswains, then you need to accumulate time for your master 5, which is stricter in that it needs to be done on boats over a certain size. This is about 18 months of actual sea time. A coxswains really won't get you too far if you want to drive bigger boats, unless you are in it for at least 3 years.
A unrestricted coxswains lets you drive a boat under 12m to 15nm from the coast.

interesting
something most people wouldn't consider -
Colour Blindness is more prevalent among males - Ten million American men, ie 7% of the male population, cannot distinguish red from green, or see red and green differently from most other people.

Daylight only
Was a chap doing his master 5 at the same time as I did mine, he was colour blind and his ticket had " daylight hour only" stamped on it.

get your seatime logged and
get your seatime logged and approved (12 months for coxswains?).
Then sign up for a course with TAFE or someone else and pass your written exams.
Go and do your oral exams with DPI and whamo- you've got a coxswains.

that'll get you started. If you're serious in driving charters though you'd be better getting your coxswains then working towards your Master 5- heaps more jobs then.

If you have logged the hours, or know the skipper who will sign you off then you could be laughing with the ROPES scheme.
I cant find a link for it, but I believe this is a recognition of prior experience logbook/test?

probably the main thing most
probably the main thing most people have trouble with is getting their seatime submitted, if you ever think you might want to get a commercial ticket one day then I'd make sure every time you go in a boat you log it down somewhere rather than try to rush it all at the end. It'll make the process a whole lot easier.

it was 2002 when I did mine
it was 2002 when I did mine and from what I rememeber I used something like 200 days commercial time and did a stat dec that I'd been rec boating for 10 years on vessels of xxx size. Being the entry level commercial ticket they can't really be too demanding on making everyone have full commercial sea time. I did mine in SA though and each state does things a little differently.

As mentioned above before you do anything
get a colour blindness test, if you fail that you will either have to bail, or sit a Farnsworth Lantern test that if you pass that you can still get a ticket. I wouldnt waste my time and money on anything until I get these tests. Just pop into a GP or AMSA medical officer and explain this.
Cheers

You can get your coxswain if
You can get your coxswain if you are colour blind.
if you fail the holmes wright lantern test you will need colour correction glasses.
is these glasses allow you to pass the ishihara test then you have to buy yourself two pairs which will set you back approx $2200.
take your reciepts down to department of transport along with you eye sight test that will say you can pass with colour aids and you will be able to get your ticket.

Not anymore
Got my restricted ticket about 3 months ago, failed my lantern test and was going through the process to get the glasses. rung one last time to confirm if i just needed my receipt only to be told regs were going through parliment or what ever they do. They told me to hold off on purchase till the outcome was passed.... turns out they changed the rules on use of vision aids as WA were the only state still allowing them... ended up with a sunrise to sunset restriction... pissed me right off have no problem distinguishing red green yellow white lights at night for 10 NM but a test says my eyes are shit so tough luck for me!

Some info for those colour affected
the "colour correction glasses" are nothing more than a "cheat" for the Ishihara test. You can get the same effect by doing the test holding a piece of red glass/cellophane in front of ONE eye while doing it, or using one red tint contact lens.
They dont help with distinguishing colours, only filter out certain wavelengths. I thought the glasses were long since outlawed here-certainly thru AMSA they are.
There are several other eyesight colour tests which are valid but often the people you are speaking to have no idea of the full regs. Sometimes a bloke can fail one but pass another. It doesnt matter which you pass, and you'll likely find optomotrists are very helpful and sympathetic.
It is probably definitely much better if you have concerns to go to them NOT your Sea Service Medical Examiner, but to go straight to an Opto, then get a letter if you can get past. If you fail with the doctor you can still go to an Opto and try all options. There is nothing dodgy about that. Once you have passed, DPI do not require it to be done ever again. AMSA every 6 years.
Anyone who wants more info can PM me if they are affected.
