Crabbers on the swan
Submitted by rigpig on Tue, 2013-12-03 13:32
I have noticed a couple of dinghy's on the swan between the narrows and Barracks St jetties over the last couple of days. Each boat has had about crab nets down. Anybody know if they are getting any?

Not yet
Was working down there last week and spoke to 4 different boats over a few days... No crabs yet.
Also reminded a dude that the limit is 10 nets, so he pulled (or maybe relocated out of my sight) the other 15 nets he had in...

Got 5 from the deep water
Got 5 from the deep water Sunday morning but that was from 8 pulls of our 10 nets. Bit of work for a small taste, still need some warmer weather, should be good in a few weeks.

Hi Goodz .. how long did you end up doing your ropes ? .. extending mine now was 25m the go .. Heading out Thur or Friday for a look and a beer or two .. while I'm at it what bait did you use ? , I might mix it up with some heads and frames and trusty ole chicken wings .

Added 20m of 6mm rope to the nets which had 6.5m already but found that it was just a little too much to wind the 20m onto the float (those ones with the cut out middle) if we were to crab in shallow water so ended up measuring 22m total on all of them. Marked the rope every 5m with a permant marker (white rope) and added a shark clip to the float end to easily secure the rope at the required length. Doubt we will ever drop in deeper than 20m, all the crabs we got on the weekend were in 16-17m nothing more and nothing less even though we varied the depths. Seemed to be some sort of 'layer' that showed up on the sounder at that level too.
Used spleen, chicken necks and herring frames. Got all the crabs on the chicken necks.
Thurs arvo looks the goods I recon, considering going out too but work may take priority.

Went out yesterday .. not
Went out yesterday .. not ideal timing right on a extreme low tide and 4 hrs after daybreak .. got 8 in 100 pulls in 15 - 20m most in the first few .. Put back half a dozen huge berried girls and a couple just over .. if we went change of light with incoming tide I think we would've done better . However could've bagged out on starfish they were in nearly every net .. The swanny crabs are aren't far off .

need some warm weather, this weekend should see the water temps rise. I reckon they still have a malt to go yet. Anyone getting any soft crabs?

Yes Bodie
Went out but in Peel-harvey and even though all small they were just small. 4 pulls off 10, and most pots had at least a crab, with most 2-3 (and one pot broke our PB with 5 crabs - all U/S) But measured heaps because normally I can eyeball a undersize and just tip them out, but most where getting close.
Because off having to measure noticed that about a quarter was soft, some very soft. They either had just malten and not stiffened and stretched up, or might need another to get over the size. Either way had one certain big boy, a few probably OK but I dont take chances, and heaps just under. The lonely big boy was kept in the live well and returned to grow bigger as it wasnt/isnt worth keeping 1.
Either way had a ball getting crabs again.

Dropped the tub in with the W&Ks on sunday at mozzies, late start so was after high tide, fished several areas from 8m to 20m deep, a few big berried females and one under sized male, noone else was doing much better. Water temp was 23.5, think ill do a bit more research into swan crabs (times, tides, locations), or just head down to mandurah after christmas, was never hard down there to get a feed

Saw some people get a few size crabs at Claremont Jetty 2 weeks ago, nothing big though. Once the weather warms up over the next few weeks it'll fire up, usually have our most productive sessions in Jan, biggest being 92cm across the claws 2 years ago!
