Haven't tried yet myself in the sound this season ...bloke up the road from me reckons they did alright , don't know where exactly ...seen a boat with nets out just along the rock face just out from the ramp on monday ...also on the inside of the asi groyne given that the swells going to be 4m + wouldn't be straying too far out myself...2 and half hours away thats keen where from ...hopefully someone on here can put you on the money with a discreet pm...good luck

what do you think it's a
what do you think it's a millpond all year round there Tim O ...I can tell you at times it can get very lumpy and crappy when the weathers up on the outside...end of woodmans point on parmelia bank is popular for crabs ...I wouldn't be sitting out there tomorrow myself...but I'm no legend

Ofcourse the seas kick up
Ofcourse the seas kick up with enough wind, even the river gets nasty, but I cant see any swells makin it into the sound when theres a big bit of land in the way. If the winds down, the sound is sound, no matter the size of the swell running

There is a patch that does
There is a patch that does break not far from the tip of woodies in aprox sw direction.
Needs swell and would think if its as big as predicted in the morning then it will be breaking.

Hmm, im not experienced in thesound much, but wondered if any swell might be able to get in betwern gi and the main land that may have affect on one line or path. Would have to be shallow or exposed reef to get a break

Crab's!
I went crabbing recently in the Sound and Owen anchorage and got a nice feed of blue manners. Descent size plus a few big females also.....the deeper water was more productive!
The weather isnt looking the best for the Sound........I would be hitting the Swan River!
Good luck

I think alot of people dont
I think alot of people dont know the difference between swell and seas, you dont get swell in the sound, same as the gulf of exmouth etc

River
Definately give the river a go if the sound is uncomfortable. Blackall Reach or from the Swan Brewery through to the other side of the city should see you with some crabs onboard. Good luck. Post up some pics if you get some.

Snorkelling
I've been doing a bit of snorkelling with the young fella straight off Palm Beach, absolutely loads of undersize along the weed/sand border, and a few XL males out a bit deeper (2-3M) hiding in the weed. Funny I've never had a problem seeing the big ones snorkelling, and never had one in a net! Probably due to the nets only getting out once a year or so, and snorkelling all the time.

swell in the sound
Big swells will affect the sound either by surging through the coathanger or the gap between GI & Carnac & certainly when coming from a NW direction also seen plenty of swells boating at Exmouth both in and out of the gulf as you say Timo your not expert in the sound

I was in the sound/behind carnac today. Was beautiful with very little of the big swells getting through. Surge at point peron ramp was not so fun

Iam with you Fred there can
Iam with you Fred there can be swell in the sound that's foreshore no one will understand until they have been stuck just outside the shipping channel in front of GI I have seen military ships struggle to get into the channel of GI When a Good Norwester is blowing.Timo a swell is determine by consistency seas are inconsistent I understand what u say by when people dont understand the difference by swell and seas sometimes I think the bomb has no idea either. When there is huge swell running outside the islands with the correct current and wind direction it allows the swells to get in the sound they may not be as large as they are out side but once they get in they have a rebound effect off islands that can cause unpredictable swells inside the sound. But hey until u have experienced swells in the sound it will be hard for you to believe a word of advice you don't want to experience swells in the sound it is very dangerous and unpredictable!!!!
p.s Beerburper sorry to I encourage the people on this thread that are avoiding your question but I just hate hearing people take people's threads off topic let alone be incorrect with their statements. Good luck in the sound mate but a heads up if you are going to travel two hours for a crab you can't beat the swan river blueys they are there ATM not in huge numbers but there size makes up for it I have been twice in the last week plus I am going again this arvo I have only be managing half a dozen but the smallest crab we go was 150mm across the carapace and the biggest so far being 182mm six of them at that size gives you heaps of meat

went out on sunday. started
went out on sunday. started at woodmans point in about 2-3m of water only got 1 sized and threw back 1 small in 2.5 hours. went over to south end of GI and tried from 16-20m of water and only got 1 small. i had heard reports of lots of crabs but there wasnt much evidence of that. tried using 3 different baits and moved aroung heaps still with no luck.
hope you did better than me

thanks David
Consistency of the swells nails that argument shut , as you and I both know the sound can be bloody scarey when an unforecast NW front & swell goes thru it !
See ya tommorrow in the great Crab Quest those we got the other night were deluxe bit of work in deep water but definetly worth it !

Thanks for the info guys, I
Thanks for the info guys, I will reconsider boatin in the sound when a NW blows up........ Any recommendation where might be safe to go when a NW front hits???? I was refering to any normal weather situation, most of the year the swell comes from the SW, I would imagine the swells (and seas)from the NW only exist when the blow is on, surely the swell from the NW wont exist much after the front passes. Oh sorry beerburper for invading your post, nice work on the crabs in the swan the other day...hope you didnt come from south and drove past mandurah to hunt for mannas in Perth :/

No all good, swan river is
No all good, swan river is only just over a hours drive for me, think I made the right choice going on the river by the sounds of it. Going to give mandurah a hit Australia Day weekend.
