Cray gauges
Submitted by little johnny on Thu, 2017-12-14 19:50
Seen fisheries today taking a cray of elderly couple. There 76 mm gauge fitted tight on couples guage. ( could hold weight of cray).Fisheries one was loose, hence cray being taken away, don't buy cheap gauges. I always use 77 mm sheridan s/s gauge. Ally ones crap. Even had fish sticker out once. Just check.

Not fisheries
Fault . No dought be small fine . Cheap gauges can catch you out . Just check them. Little Andy after being checked at ramp, ( by fisheries) had a yarn to another elderly couple , they where doing bad on crays. Andy gave them 3 of his crays. Not many kids do that . I told him buy lotto ticket after doing good deed.

I vernier mine (too much spare time?)
And if the gauge fits they go back, tight loose or in between. Giving crays to our retired neighbours is a big part of why I cray.

Do the same for my neibours.90 percent all retired . They can't afford to buy them on pension. They have always put up with my boyz and girls growing up. Great people . Never complained. They get pretty exited when they receive them. Sea goat you may have to wait for second run around feb of memory .

Free Feed for local pelicans
I cleaned two breaksea cod while on-board my boat and Fisheries busted me for it. They donated the two fish to the local pelicans at Palm Beach Boat ramp. Was no issues with the size of the fish but I still got a fine in the mail around 2 weeks later.

Imagine being a pro
r We we often handling thousands a day, and sometimes a lot of them were " furries", ie, just size or not? I personally made it the skippers call, and was never busted, but had the odd argument, and a couple confiscated one day, no fine. Still reckon they were size Ok for 26 years at it, and needing to amke my living from it. We actually had " Gauge checkers" made up by an engineering firm in Geraldton, just a piece of s/s half inch round bar, machined to exactly 76 ( or 77) mm. Check the gauge with that one a regular basis. I still have them, and still use them. I would never trust an ali or plastic gauge.
I'm pulling pots off my boat for the first time this season tomorrow, mate has been pulling shared, with my wife, his partner, and another bloke, off his boat while I've been at work. They haven't been real good up here, so far.

Be aware
That the legislation covering the catching of rock lobster specifically states that the gauge used for measuring by fisheries officers can not be challenged for accuracy.
The gauge they used is deemed to be 100% accurate for the purpose of measuring rock lobster.

Yes, I've had that argument.
Even measured them with digital verniers, nup, their word was final. It would be interesting to actually challenge the measurement in court.
