Cray Pots - Jarrah or Pine?
Submitted by bradz on Thu, 2014-12-04 12:46
Hi guys
Im heading up to Jurien in the first week of January. My question is, if I am getting some pots made up should I be getting Jarrah or pine slats?
Some people are telling me that Jarrah are only good for reds and the whites dont like them, whereas some swear by pine all season long.
Any constructive input would be appreciated.
Cheers
Brad

Jarrah
My pots are all Jarrah, and always catch well for both reds and whites. In our group of 3 licenses and 6 pots, we have a mixture of pine and jarrah and I'd say there is no significant difference between catch rates.

either, doesnt make a lot of difference.
Though January up north is almost dead for cray at Gero, not sure about Jurien.

id agree with belly , catch
id agree with belly ,
catch rate for a rec is pretty much the same for both jarrah and pine , so long as the pots heavy
only thing id add is , i build jarrah frames with pine slats , reason is , the jarrah frame will last longer then pine , especially at the bolts , and the pine slats are easier to cut /snap & nail on when at sea , no drilling as you might need to do for jarrah slats

Thanks
Thanks guys.
I'm a little better informed but still unsure which way to go. Leaning towards jarrah but with no real conviction.

Pine or Jarrah
bradz,
we use both here in Kalbarri and find the Jarrah require less repairs during the season than the pine and we find they both catch crays, might be different with the pros if they are in very deep water.
My advice would be to get your new pots made out of Jarrah, they will last longer and require less repair work.

Yep. Will be going with steel bases so will hopefully be enough weight.

I am going to get two made
I am going to get two made up next year. steel bases. I am going to get my gear id welded into the base and also give the guy one or two brake disks to weld into the bases as well for some added weight.
