Cray theives

Hey all,

Just wondering if u see someone pulling ur craypot and u get their boat number etc, why is it that fisheries can't do anything about it.

I think it is crap that ppl do this to one another, as we spend the time to go catch fresh cray and see ppl pull our pots all the time. It is normally the same boat.

So all in all have got bugger all crays this year compared to previous years.

mark ya crays mate.

Mon, 2009-12-21 12:35

put some marked crays in there, tell fisheries, and wait for them at the ramp mate. its the only way.

or video them, but you gotta get your pot i.d. number in the shot.

or a small explosive device that detonates 40 seconds after the rope gets pulled.....

I like the sound of the explosive device. One morning when going to pull them I saw them throwing my pot back in the water and laughing their heads off. Would love to video them but no waterprrof video camera and Mrs would kill me if I damaged the one we have.

How would I go about marking them? Any ideas?

mark some of their shells

Mon, 2009-12-21 13:41

mark some of their shells with a liquid paper pen, or ya missus's nail polish, then photo them and chuck them back in ya pots. dont use too much paint, or make it look like you've marked them, cos it will give it away.

or, ring the water police. it is stealing.

fishing in rockingham. Did have words with them but hey when there is more than one of them and only me it a bit hard. My family live off the fresh fish I catch (when they are on the bite) and it is so dissapointing when other fisherman do this to one another. ESp all the money u spend on bait, licences, fuel etc

I managed to stop those in the south pulling mine

Mon, 2009-12-21 14:32

Was dropping pots off canals early season before last, found that my pots were moving a fair bit so I put a nice big lump of weight in the pots. Still moved so I decided I would go down earlier the next day.

This is where I dont suggest anyone follows my thinking, I put a bottle in the pot with IM WATCHING YOU written on it in the pot. Sat out there fishing and watching as they pulled the bottle out of the pot. Needless to say I think they got my message, left with my pot and all still in their boat.

Never noticed my pots being pulled again, Saying that normally I dive for most of my crays :)

Just put some small hooks on

Mon, 2009-12-21 15:31

Just put some small hooks on the rope about half way down, facing down. That tends to stop them pretty quick. Just remember they're there.

Last year one of the pro's up here ( a mate of mine) pulled his pots on the Monday after the first weekend closure for them only to find several of his pots full of XXXX gold cans. Absolute dog trick. We searched high and low for anyone drinking it but unfortunately didn't find anyone. Who the bloody hell drinks that stuff anyway?

plenty of keyboard warriors here apparently. Shit comes to shove and a majority of you wouldn't do anything - but that is the smart thing to do! Swim over to the boat with a knife and do what?!? Is it worth having a criminal conviction or even worse a life sentence over crayfish? Take down details, get photos and report it. It may be horribly ineffective and slow, but its the best option.

I've had pots pulled and stolen myself. And yeah you think you'd love to get your hands on em and fix em up, but when reality kicks in it and you calm down and evaluate it honestly, it isn't worth it.

And for what it's worth, IMO it's a little foolish to publish on a public format that you'd intentionally attack a person over a trivial issue like this.

Best cure for that is a bit

Mon, 2009-12-21 18:54

Best cure for that is a bit of barbed wire wrapped around the rope about half way up safe to say they wont be pulling them again or at least until they get their hands sewn up.

one harmless way would be to get some dye in a bag and hope they bust it open when pulling your pots. wont harm them in any way and the dye wont wash off in a hurry. you can catch them color handed. just dont forget that the dye is there or you could be red faced

Unfortunately we just suck it up

Thu, 2009-12-24 20:40

as when we are in Leeman we have the watchers down at the Town ramp, they watch you go out in the morning to pull your pots, if any crays size them and then rebait.  You come in and go home to do what you have to do, then you go out the next morning to pull the pots and you haven't even a fish scale left,  this is after putting in nice bait and if lucky dhuie heads (should last 3 days)we call them the townie tinnie raiders (12' dinghies)  Old fart has threatened to put this in the pots or tamper with the ropes but unfortunately unless you have concrete proof, (photos, time, date, marine and harbours number) Fisheries won't do anything.  You must have the proof before they will act.

Fri, 2010-01-15 12:20

After just over a month of pullin pots we ended up with 9 crays 1 pot lost under a reef that we put the pot nowhere near 1 cane pot stolen and the rest damaged numerous times when they grab them by the slats to pull the pots in to raid them. We have had bait stripped out end gates left open and even legless undersize left in the pot for fun. We are out the back of garden island and wonder why the hell we bother we can only get out bout every third or fourth day so the pots are well stripped and bait used by the time we get back to them. Spoke to fisheries several times and they basicly shrug there shoulders guess none of the licence fee's we pay goes to actually monitering the fisherie. We will be pulling them in the morning and if nothing again they are coming out. Can only say that any fellow fisher doing this is nothing short of dismall and all belief in our fellow man is nil. After having in the past dedicated years on various committee's and associations at all levels up to RFAC (when it existed) fighting for fishers and their rights to fish and have a decent catch i find it hard to think this is who i was fighting for. Very disapointed.

I gave up a long while back cause you are wasting your time. Thieves are running amuck out there and you can complain to fisheries all you like but they will do nothing. Could there be an agenda in there non action on this matter. Maybe its a way off getting rid of amatuers and relieving the so called pressure on fishing stocks. One think for sure it got my pots out the water for good.
