crayfish scenario
Gday all
Over the weekend I thought of this scenario in regards to cray fishing as Im sick of losing crays to divers. Almost everytime i go to rotto i find divers sitting smack bang in the middle of our pots and as much they tell me they are looking in out pots why cant the dive on another part of the reef. (i kow im not the only one that this happens too)
While they are underwater they cant be seen and therefore could raid as many pots as they want but we as pot pullers are limited to 2 (or four per boat if there are two licenses onboard). What i was thinking was pulling mine and my mates pots and if we havent caught our limit diving on his dads pots provided he isnt coming over. but isnt diving on these pots the same as pulling them - so why cant i pull them instead?

Some Potters are just such
Some potters are just such whingers!
Your pots, assuming you have a clue, are where the crayfish are. Do you expect the divers to dive where the crayfish aren't?
I've taken plenty of bag limits from ground holding crays, and there are empty pots nearby, so don't assume the divers just nicked yours either.
If you're going to do something illegal, why don't pull the other pots instead of diving to do it?

touchy
mmm touchy subject i think
agree with till.... the crays are in a certain area - therefore there are going to be pots and divers in the same area.. until you actually can prove that someone is pinching the crays out of your pots no foot to stand on.... if someone is doing that then shame on them!! its stealing and they cannot be much chop diving if they have to resort to taking them from someones pots....
The crays have done there walkies and are not around in huge numbers so dont be expecting to pull your 6 per person every day
i went for a dive today and had some waynekerr come over accusing us of pinching his crays - let him have his big whine then showed him the gun im carrying - not even after crays and 100m away from his pots... eeeeddddiiiioott

I've never dived a spot with pots where there isn't loads more crays outside the pots. On the ground ived dived thats been loaded up the pots had maybe one or two if they were lucky. Not unusual to see none in them even if crays nearby too (though, maybe someone already pulled the pots for the day). You just don't need to take them out of the pots. Most dives I've done have been near pots because that's where the crays are. Can be pretty hard to find spots without pots too. I suspect most divers would not be raiding pots so just because you see Divers on your spot, doesn't mean it's cause for concern.

If you're capable...
...of "diving on his dad's pots", why not just dive for crays in the first place?
It's quite easy to assume that people are up to no good just because you can't see them...guilty until proven innocent, right? As long as you're going to pot for crays, all you CAN do is assume. My advice is to get a dive ticket and leave the guesswork to others. If you are unwilling or unable to do that, then continue to use craypots but don't accuse others of doing the wrong thing unless you can actually prove it.

Not that i have ever tried it
But i would say it would be fairly hard to catch a cray by hand in a pot.If you think about it you would have to hold yourself still in the current and surge, then you would have to get your arm in and would only have movement from your elbow. If the cray got past you would then have to turn around and get your arm back in and try again. If you tried to take them out of the end of the pot you would lose most of them trying to get one.All to hard i would think. If one diver was doing that and another diver was swimming a loaded ledge in the time it took to get one out of a pot the other would be bagged out.Simple thing is sometimes the crays dont leave their ledge and when they do only a few will go in a pot the others will walk straight past it.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Another disillusioned
Another disillusioned cray pot owner. We had fisheries come over to us a couple of weeks ago and the skipper accused us of diving on his pots, we hadn't even got in the water yet and were 50m from his pots and directly over a hole we had found a few weeks earlier!!
Seems everyone that doesnt get a bag limit in their pot immediately has to blame someone else for their bad luck.
Get a tank and go and loop some yourself. Although then you will automatically be a thieving diver.

Lol mate you serious, should
Lol mate you serious, should of chucked him the handbag! I personally think pots are more at risk from others pulling them, the amount of pots we have had moved well away from there position. Not to mention pulling ours up for a few bugs then diving and seeing a ledge loaded... ahh paranoia alive & well

I've dived plenty of times
I've dived plenty of times around other pots and never once thought about raiding them.
Much easier and more fun to loop your own.
The reason you cannot pull other pots, is because they are not licensed to you.

I know that when I dive, I
I know that when I dive, I tend to drop down in around 15-22 meters of water when looking for crays. If I find good ground with pots nearby, I anchor near them (within say 50 meters) so I have my anchor and hopefully two pots in a triangle just so I don't end up too far from my boat. Being a newish diver, this gives me the security of finding my way home easily.
I've also purchased my own pot in which I haven't caught a single stupid cray in this year and have seen one pot in maybe twenty that actually had a cray in it.... and in case it's asked, i don't steal from pots. If you're relying on stealing from pots, you'll starve!

try this....
pull your pots first thing in the morning.
Remember your crays will start trying to get out once the sun comes up.

Escape Gaps
The absolute best way to catch crays in a pot is to pull them early in the morning, ie as soon as you are legally able to. I've been told of video footage showing crays climbing in and out of pots all night to get a feed. Obviously they hide during the day and out and about under the cover of darkness. There is little doubt that the ground around cray pots would hold heaps of crays otherwise you wouldn't drop your pot there in the first place. Having said all this there are always going to be people doing the wrong thing and pinching them from pots. I dive for them and have never raided a pot but like others that have posted before me, I haven't seen that many in a pot during the day. And I'm guessing that they are the dumb ones that didn't follow all their mates out while it was still dark.
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

if your at rotto you might as
if your at rotto you might as well get out the snorkel and look around the bays. I picked up a couple big (120mm) males in 20mins of snorkelling in 2-4m
as for divers raiding your pots, i dont see how or why a diver would raid your pots... if there crays in your pot, there going to be a shitload outside it.

Cray Pots
I have always called them holding pens,
I dived on a couple of pots at rotto last week because some Dick Head left 20m of rope on the surface for me to hit and have my transducer rip clean off.
Never found the transducer, but thems the breaks.

On the other end of the
On the other end of the spectrum, i had a boat sound around my 4 pots and my mates 2 for at least half an hour, before finally anchoring right on top of one of my mates pots. He then dropped his dive flag in the water. I went over and he said that the pots were on his spot. I say if it was his spot then why did it take him half an hour to anchor? I don't have a problem with divers at all, as i do dive myself, but it was pretty obvious as to what he was doing. He would only look at me when i was 20 metres from his boat and i called out. He was very sheepish, so to speak.
I guess at the end of the day i'm shooting myself by advertising my isolated spots with floats. I just hope he was responsible and didn't take a bag full of jumbos.
