Ocean Reef

Tue, 2015-11-24 08:34

Well that was hard work this morning. Stiff SW wind, but got 4 whites.

I think my problem earlier was not being close enough to the reef.

2 whites in one pot that was 80m by itself from all others, other 3 pots got zip from a 3 day soak.

Moved all our pots away from pot city as it is just to busy.

ill probably go tomorrow morning just to see if the move has helped.

Hey uncle, beside you at the ramp or on the water?

Have pots spread from OR to Mindarie now chasing the whites! Or did you see me going backwards and forwards looking for my pot... i was in the wrong spot for about 20 minutes swearing like a trooper thinking the pot had been stolen...only for me to be looking at the wrong mark on the GPS :)

How did you go today?

Tue, 2015-11-24 14:02

Haha.  We're all human.  I have started colour coding my gps symbols, which are just like little cray fish .  Yellow represents where we have just dropped the pot, ie current location.  When we pull it it gets changed to either

Red = we caught reds

White = we caught whites

Blue = we caught fuck all  (we have a lot of those)....

Light blue = the pot is there but stuck, which we now dont have any of at the moment.

If i see some promising ground i mark with purple.  Because anything purple promises plenty but may not necessarily deliver!

Good to see a few doing well off OR

Tue, 2015-11-24 20:01

Can't get out next couple of days with work so loaded pots up with orange roughie. See what comes of it Friday or sat morning. One pot well and truly stuck, weather this morning wasn't conducive to removal. Gave up after 20mins and a lot of swearing. Will take dive gear with me to remove its backup...

Randall. Do you have a navman tracker with cray symbol? Haha It's what I use too. Diff colours tho but same theory...

Thinking of spray painting another float and adding it on. Sometimes hard to find the white ones... What do others do?

 AHarman

Yeah you need at least 2 floats when the seas are up with 1.5 to 2 meters rope between them. You can see one float at the top of swell when the other is in the trough.

You can use spray paint which is easy but after 8 weeks or so the thin paint can wear off, best is brush on nice and thick gloss or just use varnish.

Had a nice 2.5 m Bronzie waiting for a feed again at the back of the boat today, this must be the fifth time in the last 4 weeks, certainly seems atracted to us, we must sound like a cray boat.

I'll try and get a happy snap next time for ya.

After enduring yesterday mornings crap conditions I wasnt able to get out this morning due to a leg injury. Due to work I cant pull the pots again until Friday. I hope the cray gods are smiling on me and the pots are nice and full.

Dumb question, but do crays only move during the night?

We pull ours between 8 and

Wed, 2015-11-25 16:41

We pull ours between 8 and 9.30. Drop kids to school, at the ramp by 8.30 and back in by 9.30. Three pots. We have been at it from the start and have only had one pulled or dragged by a boat that im aware of. I am pretty pedantic about how they go down and where they sit. I check them with the viewing bucket. The one that was pulled was quite obvious, it was upside down, on weed and 40m from my mark. We are pretty new to it down this way (mindarie) and until last week has been pretty slow going. Really just starting to suss the ground, havnt hit the double figures but got 8 today.

A question on pots. We have two pine battened and one beehive. One of the pine pots seems to always have a few in it, the beehive also does well, but the other pine pot has caught nothing in the same area. I noticed the ballast is only spot welded to the bars in a couple of spots and if i tap the side of the pot it makes a vibrating noise. Do you think this could be making some noise under water with the surge that turns the crays away? I cant think of anything else. Same bait, same spots and depth?  Weird

Buzzy, rattly pots

Wed, 2015-11-25 17:53

Are generally not as good. Weld to every bottom rail or at least zip tie/tie wire. Pineys do generally take a while to catch if you put them in the water brand new--if you cop that resin smell as they come over the tipper, they've got a bit of soaking to do yet. This only applies when brand new, of course.

Hillaries

Anyone potting out from Hillaries at the moment? It's the closest ramp to me and I'm wondering how busy the ramp is getting through the week.

last 5 days have got the 24

Thu, 2015-11-26 16:21

last 5 days have got the 24 bag without pulling more than 3 pots. that's at GI. Was on FFB and got sfa
Seen a few shady acting boats around which would move on once we get near. Ive got to know most the people around my pots so keeping a sharp eye out for pirates!

plastic pot is doing more than the others combined. If this a coincidence??

Last year we caught more in

Thu, 2015-11-26 17:46

Last year we caught more in the plastic pots I think ended up with maybe 10 between two, the plastics averaged 12 each per pull. The year before majority were caught in the wooden, just waiting to see what this year will bring, only had one pull so far and got nothing

a bit early for FFB, come closer.

Pro's are working in closer, and they are now potting up hard. Pro's putting pots 5-10m apart all the way up.

Not bad

Thu, 2015-11-26 20:03

Got 12 today from 3 pots. The 4th one has gone walkabout.  Spent 20min looking for some sign of it but not even a rope under the water, for if the floats got chopped with someones prop.

Off Mindarie.

2 person limit from 3 pots

Fri, 2015-11-27 07:23

2 person limit from 3 pots for us today, 1 decky slept in, he is spewing haha. Also noticed a pro boat working right along the back edge of the 3 mile, so for the guys who arnt getting any at the moment there's a big hint for ya.

Also had a boat come over to me and ask "do you know who's pot your pulling?" I said yeah my pot and showed him my floats. I've had a pot in the water next to this guy for weeks, see him in same spot same time every morning I'm out there. He mustn't of caught enough crays so decided to start pointing the finger instead. He said my floats looked the same as his but in that area there arnt any similar to mine at all. Ah well I guess me and him have broken the ice now, hopefully our next chat on the water is a bit more friendly
