Yay finally got better

Tue, 2015-12-01 12:07

Yay finally got better numbers, 10 today 80% whites, and first tar spot all season.

Funny thing is we still havent caught an undersize cray this season?

We did have our pots off hillarys on the three mile in 15 - 18 m and where only getting 1 or 2 per day.

Brought them in to 12 - 14 meters 2 days ago and hey presto (hopefully it just isnt due to the rough weather) , I'll probably leave them here for the next 7 days and see how my mate goes who is still out near the western edge of the three mile 15 - 18m.

Saw the fisheries boat chugging around on the three mile late morning as well.

 Parking inspector at ocean

Wed, 2015-12-02 09:01

Parking inspector at ocean reef this morning, good to see all the knobs who park in the retieval lanes get booked, and one said knob had a yearly pass but still parked down there...knob!

Each day more and more cars in the car park, but looks like a lot getting out real early, we launched at 5.10 back in by 6.20 and a lot had already gone home.

Pot of the day had 18 in it today, out deeper in 22m

We hit the water before dawn

Sat, 2015-12-05 12:10

We hit the water before dawn and conditions were perfect.  The lightning as we drove out of ellenbrook was a bit off putting but had cleared by the time we got to the ramp.

We got 13 today.  Going to give tomorrow a miss.

Got some real dirty looks coming in to the marina from those heading out, as if to say what have you been doing out so early?   (We were only 15 mins earlier than normal!

Sat, 2015-12-05 12:21

Wsw of the marina?  Yeah but been watching it for weeks now.    There is a break about 300m to the south west, but the tricky one is about 100m to the north.  Bottom comes up to about 4m there and it doesnt vreak all the time. Just gotta keep an eye on the drift when we're pulling the pot.  A couple of occasions ive thought we may not be able to get close enough, but hasnt proved an issue yet.  We've done well in that little patch.

Pot movement

Sat, 2015-12-05 10:38

thought I would have the first sleep in for the past 2 weeks and head out @ 5am and the pots have been relocated and emptied for me! 4 of them in a little cluster together not the straight long line they were dropped in. Goes to show , you can't let it slip for even a day!

Hope all the honest ones made it back in safe as it got gnarly quick out there

It would have to be someone who dosent even have their own pots out OR more likley someone who is going all out like the guy with 90+ tails.

We have been bagging out (for 3) with just 2 pots. They are the kind of scum that need a 20K+ fine and banned from a cray liscence for life.

weather is not looking good for the next few days though

poachers are around , heard some crew down south got pinged for large amounts of abs over the limit , fisheries are out and about down our way , which is good imo

its great to see them out doing the rounds and it a necessity that our waters stocks are managed. all for my kids experiencing what we have if not even better if managed well, just need to delete some of the scum out there that are shitting on others. I applaud fisheries for doing what they can do with the resources they have available on the stretch of coast we have over here

Went out today at 0700 which

Sat, 2015-12-05 12:25

Went out today at 0700 which turned out to be maybe 30 min to late.

By 0820 the squall came through and conditions went from OK to very hairy, mainly just the wind the swell was down so just wind waves.

we got 10 between us on the 3 mile which was ok, but Id just like to say if you do find yourself out in those conditions make sure you know where to go through the reef safely and stay on track.

A boat in front of us today was tracking OK then right where you go through the reef was at least 60m north of the gap as they where sorting some stuff on deck.

Where they ended up going through was very very very shallow and I was surprised they didnt hit bottom, They did realise eventually but by that time they where over the reef, this reef sucks dry when swell runs.

The last place you want to break down or hit bottom is either in the passage or just out of or in the heads.

Mon, 2015-12-07 14:14

Are you in Merkel ? From what I've read on here generally whites don't carry eggs but I'm just learning the two big reds I got today were both males but in the same sand patches I was getting the whites in but I've moved now from 9-12 m out to 22-24 but wouldn't mind getting out a little deeper to say 30 m if the weather lets me had yakka in a little boat got soaked today me a my young bloke .
