Crays 2020

Put 4 pots in on Saturday with my boys off Mindarie.

First pull the next day- nothing.

Next day pots felt a lot heavier after a soak and got one red. Pro cray boat setting about 300 m off the beach.

I'm 1km offshore in 8m. Will try again in the morning.

How are you going so far?

I would try around 3-5m with a couple of pots, I fish sor but that's where I have been doing better lately, but I have been getting pots stuck alot and having to snorkle on them. Freezer has enough crays for Xmas neighbours have been looked after all a bonus from here for me.

Tue, 2020-10-27 06:01

I think your timing will be right Andy I think the full moon is 2nd Dec will be cranking by then, I'm still getting the odd pot with up to a dozen in it. Had a empty pot on sat opened the bait basket and there was a bloody big octopus tentacle in there must have taken off when I started pulling pot, bloody bastard scaring all the crays away.

Put mine in 5 weeks ago.

Got 80 between 2 of us.

Pulled pots out last weekend.

Never went deeper than 13m (SoR).

All good sized reds. You can keep the whites.....

All double shells . Very slow moving . Pretty sure they don’t feed prior to shedding. Go into hibernation state unsure ? Spoke to some oldies down ramp lost 2 pots already . Someone obviously needed them more than the owners .

After 15th November

Tue, 2020-10-27 09:31

Just my opinion but after the 15th November the whites should start pretty thick up north of the river.
Full moon is at the end of this month, new moon 15th November so not long after that I will be setting my pots!
Cheers

Slow

Tue, 2020-10-27 11:06

Out of OR we have found them right on the reef. Hopefully the pots survive the swell coming this week 3-5meters! Been doing 2 day a week pulls. Good to see Fisheries out there already. Good to get some reds before the rush. There is a few pro boats out there working inside. Can they pull before 4:30am? we were asking that question this morning.

We've had ours set out of OR

Tue, 2020-10-27 12:03

We've had ours set out of OR for ~10 days now. Couple single cray pulls last week but managed 8 this morning (7 x red, 1 x white) after a 3 day soak. All pots in 5-12m. If you're not already out, I wouldn't rush. Give it ~2 weeks or so and the timing should be perfect.

 Same story every year....

Tue, 2020-10-27 13:23

Same story every year.... pots out early (ie; October) need to be hard up against reef chasing reds, not on edges, on reef...in my opinion waste of time, wait for the whites.

Whites are 4 weeks away, same as sea-kem usually time it to bag out first day even with dry pots.

Pro's do pot for a few reds early because they fetch a better price than the whites.

Why wait for whites you are

Wed, 2020-10-28 05:15

Why wait for whites you are only allowed 8 crays per person if I'm taking home 16 crays with my son what is wrong with that, to be honest I prefer the reds they have been huge this year and I like that the shells are strong and don't break good for if you want to use to show off your fish.

Personal preference

Wed, 2020-10-28 10:13

Personal preference really. We fish 3 blokes every cray season and bring out 8 in each every couple of days. Just easier with the whites running. Get the quota in the freezer and pull the pots out for the year. But yeah each to their own whatever works for the individual.
Cheers

Others checking pots

Wed, 2020-10-28 13:42

Speaking of others checking pots, 3 years ago we went out early Sunday morning, around 5:00am to pull the pots early. First pot we go to pulled it in and it had no crays and 8 jacks cans in it..... We were pretty pissed off but had a bit of a chuckle. Pulled the next one and it had about 30 crays in it. Moved the first one away to deter the poachers..... Must have had a boozy night and decided to head out pulling pots haha

Fri, 2020-10-30 07:47

Nothing in 4 pots. 2 pots the bait is full of lice while the other 2 none.?

Full moon was never going to be good i suppose.  Rebaited with tuna heads. Will leave for 3 or 4 days now.

I know for the white run its sand at the back edge of reef  but  I dont know if I should move the pots next pull.?

They are in 8m in weed on the back of some little 5m lumps.

My boys is getting  good at gaffing the cray ropes.

Nice and easy at the ramp. Only 6 trailers.

Just a side note

Sat, 2020-10-31 17:46

Has anyone hade a look at the price of cray pots lately, wow, no wonder if they have a new pot and it gets stuck it's out with the diving gear and a very serious effort is made at recovering the pot.
You certainly wouldn't want to have 2 or 3 stolen in a season or lost on the good old terra firma
