Crays 2020

Put 4 pots in on Saturday with my boys off Mindarie.

First pull the next day- nothing.

Next day pots felt a lot heavier after a soak and got one red. Pro cray boat setting about 300 m off the beach.

I'm 1km offshore in 8m. Will try again in the morning.

How are you going so far?

Mon, 2020-12-07 09:43

Strong easterly today, not unsafe but boat moving so fast it was very difficult for me and my 9 year old deckie to pull the pots up. 1 pot snagged , probably not too bad but couldn't get over it with the wind. 6 good keepers out of the other pots. 4 undersized reds and 2 googy egg females.

No que at the ramp.  Nice morning with my boy.

Nearly half a bag

Wed, 2020-12-09 11:46

Got 5 from our first pot in 12m off Hillarys this morning, then 1 pot in 17m had 2 and the other had zilch. Reset our 4th pot in 15m that had gone walkies 50m against the current a couple of days prior that had a batten missing. Now will always keep spares on the boat.

Have had a hard time of it this season gents, and yet to bag out. Got a new tipper / winch then we managed to bend the tipper against the jetty when retrieving, bent the locking arm, and the bridle keeps choking on the narrow roller that will require adjustment. Had a bust up with a deckie no 1 who was unreliable, persisted to use a crappy collapsible metal pot, had a penchat for tieing this off to my boat when it got stuck whilst ignoring the 2 metre rollers coming through, all while using the minimum bait possible. Replacement deckie is keen as mustard but is a work in progress.

And Uncle, I would cross my fingers too but I amputated the end of my finger two weeks ago when hooking up the boat to my car. Then learnt the hard way that craybait and a finger injury aren't a good mix.

Fri, 2020-12-11 09:56

Finally bagged out this morning. The better weather over the last few days has really helped in getting pot placement right, and dialing in the sonar. Now have a couple of good spots marked which will make things easier going forward. All part of the learning curve I guess.

Pot placement is critical, we dropped ours with the water not so clear and couldn't see the reef/sand patches. First pot 3 crays too far on the sand, next pot 10 m away on perfect ground 15 crays.

Sand holes can be good early

Sun, 2020-12-13 13:53

But the edge is where the action is. The best edges are those backed up by good reds ground. Just pick any old transition of sand to reef and you may miss out. As they progress, move further off. Another tip is to find an inside edge which has a good outside edge further east with sand beween them--they will pile up on the inside edge as they head out, and they are often ignored.

We'll use up the last of our bait over the next week and call it a wrap I think. Me and the crew have enough so it's just "xmas present" time now for friends and family.

 First dive of the season

Sun, 2020-12-20 07:38

First dive of the season yesterday in less than 5m of water. Must be 5 kakkas to each size one. Got 12 in the pots, 8 of which were size and 13 in the dive 7 were size.

Listening to the report of a white on VHF behind GI and having the shark spotter chopper sound an alarm 400m away from us made me a bit anxious, but the thing that irritate us the most was another boat rocking up at the 1000m2 rock we're diving on and duck dive around us trying for crays.

I know I know, it's not our rock and he can go anywhere he wants but there are plenty of rocks around...

Season done. Pulled our pots in today. As its our first season we had a goal of 50 crays. We just counted our "trophy" bag of all the clipped tails and got 115. Thanks to my hard working deckie, up at 5am then off to primary school without complaint. Thanks to all those that contributed to the thread.

No updates for a while. Anyone still have pots out?

I missed the white run, didnt get into wa untill 18 d3c and pots out 20th, currently have mine on the back of the 5 out from mandurah. 5-6 day soaks are getting me 10-15 decent reds per pull. Interested to know if anyone is still getting them in close? Especially around mandurah/rocko area?
